Some of you have heard this story before, because I posted it the next day after it happened. When I prayed about today's message, it came to me, so here goes.

I took the back way to my student's home, as it's a much nicer ride than taking the highway. However, because of the way Massachusetts roads are laid out, there are some dangerous intersections. One in particular crosses a very busy route, and there are no traffic controls. To make matters more difficult, there is a hill on the heavily traveled road that hides cars as they approach. You can't see them coming until you have already committed to crossing the street. The town has since made the crossing street ONE WAY in both directions, so that traffic will not cross the busier street. I suppose two ONE WAY signs are cheaper than Traffic Lights. It works though.

I approached the intersection, and came upon the immediate aftermath of a terrible motorcycle accident. The beautiful Harley Davidson Touring Bike was on its side, and looked like it had skidded several yards. A truck driver was being interviewed by the Police. And, in my direct line of vision, the EMT's were loading the biker onto a gurney. They had stripped off his leather boots, which lay beside him on the pavement, and his big white feet were sticking out from his jeans. He looked like he was dead.

I did the only thing I could do...I prayed. The cops waved me by, and, still very shook up, I prayed all the way to the Lesson, and all the way through. I decided to go home by a different route, as I couldn't bear to ride through that intersection again.

Unfortunately, the Alternate Route was a mess, in the process of being dug up for Utility Work, being done at night to avoid traffic tie-ups. A lone Police Officer, who seemed very young, was stuck with the late-night duty of directing Traffic around the Workers. I opened my window and said "Hi" to the Cop, and as we waited for the cars in the opposite direction to pass, I struck up a conversation with him.

ME: "Were you at the Accident at 139 and Grove? What happened to the guy? Is he OK?"

COP: "I wasn't there. I've been stuck here all afternoon. But I heard about it. The guy's OK. He's gonna make it. Lotsa Road Rash though, but he got his boots back. He made sure of that."

ME: Praise GOD! I prayed for him!"

COP: "So did I. I've been praying for him all afternoon!"

At that instant, both the Cop and I were filled with the Joy of recognizing each other as Brother and Sister in Christ. If he hadn't been directing traffic, and I not in my car, we probably would have hugged. He was young enough to be my grandson, and very much a part of the Establishment (I've always been kind of a rebel), He was a young policeman and I am an old biker.

We had both prayed for the biker with the big white feet, and not only did he survive, he had the presence of mind to get his boots back.

What are the odds?

Today's Passage, as always, needs to be looked at in context. Jesus was out of town when he got word that his dearest friend, Lazarus, was very sick. Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha, all lived together in one house in Bethany, a suburb of Jerusalem. Messages had to be brought by hand, and so Lazarus had been sick for a couple of days when Jesus got the message. The disciples figured that Jesus would drop everything and run to Bethany to perform a miraculous healing. They knew He could do it, as they had seen such miracles before.

There was also the possibility that Jesus could have just spoken the Word and done a long-distance healing. Why not? He had done that before too.

But Jesus didn't do EITHER of those things. In fact, He delayed so much that the disciples were puzzled and annoyed. Why would Jesus let his best friend DIE?

When Jesus finally gets to Bethany, Lazarus has already been dead four days. The process of decay has begun. There is NO Question whether Lazarus is in a Coma, or "not-quite-dead". He is most completely dead, both legally (three days gone) and physically.

Martha is REALLY upset, and says to Jesus that if he had been there on time, Lazarus would still be alive. When Jesus says that Lazarus will live again, Martha just assumes that Jesus is talking about the Resurrection of the Dead which won't take place until the End of Days.

It is at that point where Jesus declares:

"I AM the Resurrection and the Life."

After saying these words, Jesus raises Lazarus from the Dead. Still bound up in his burial shroud, Lazarus hobbles up to the doorway and shows himself to the world, proving the words that Jesus just spoke.

Jesus had said that the whole event with Lazarus was meant to show the Glory of God. Some Bible Scholars argue that the Raising of Lazarus from the Dead was the Last Straw in the series of events that caused the Religious Establishment to want to kill Jesus.

Some branches of Christianity preach that, once you are a Believer, nothing bad can happen to you. Health and Wealth will be yours if you have enough Faith. I will argue that nobody was closer to Jesus than Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Even His Family and His Disciples were not as close as the Bethany Siblings. Yet, Lazarus got so sick that he died. His sisters couldn't understand why Jesus would let that happen. Soon, though, it became evident that "all things work together for good to those who love God and are called to His Purpose" (Romans 8:28). It may LOOK really grim at first, but there's a reason for everything, and no coincidences.

Jesus told those in attendance to "Remove Lazarus's Grave Clothes and let him go."

One presumes he got dressed after that, and got his boots back.
