Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name over all the Earth!
How Wonderful You Are,
How Magnificent,
and How Glorious!
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name,
And from Generation to Generation,
Shall all People Call You Great and Wonderful!
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The One True God.
The Heavens Declare your Glory,
And With Every New Bit Of Knowledge We Gain Of Nature and the Firmament,
We Are Overwhelmed By The Awesomeness of You.
For You Created it All.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Psalm 95
1 O come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
3 For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
5 The sea is his, for he made it,
and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
6 O come, let us worship and bow down,
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
7 For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.
O that today you would listen to his voice!
8 Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,
as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,
9 when your ancestors tested me,
and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.
10 For forty years I loathed that generation
and said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,
and they do not regard my ways.’
11 Therefore in my anger I swore,
‘They shall not enter my rest.’

Like every other Bible Passage I have shared in this series, this one is best seen in Context. It's three days after Jesus has been tortured and crucified , and His former disciples are in a panic. Their Beloved Leader is dead, and suddenly they too may be targeted. It seems the whole world has turned against them. Some go into hiding, some go back to their old professions, and others are scattered. Two of them, who were not necessarily Apostles but who were among many more disciples, are walking to the town of Emmaus when a stranger joins them. The stranger asks them why they seem so depressed.
Their response is incredulous:
"Where have you been in the last week? Our Teacher, a Prophet of God, was tortured and executed in full view of Jerusalem! What are we gonna do NOW?"
Jesus (still incognito) uses that as a teaching moment to share the whole Gospel, and to explain that even the Old Testament Prophets knew beforehand that The Messiah was going to have to suffer for the sins of the world. He probably quoted Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, and a whole lot of other Scriptures that pointed to this fact.
It wasn't until they broke bread together at a little inn that the men recognized Jesus.
This incident, which is only mentioned once in the Gospels, shows the importance of Biblical Prophecy. The Words of the Prophets, from Moses writing the Torah to John of Patmos writing Revelation, all predicted future events, but being a "prophet" does not just mean telling the future. A Biblical Prophet also speaks to the people for God. The words of the prophets are not only speaking of future events, but are also instructions about behavior, admonitions pointing out sin, advice, and proclaiming God's Word.
In fact, a very small portion of some Prophets actually dealt with the future. The Prophet Elijah, for example, spent most of his career admonishing the Kings of Israel for their Idolatry, and battling the priests of Baal.
In modern times, people STILL want to know the future before it happens. Literature abounds with stories of Time Travel, and some of the best Science Fiction movies involve a form of "prophecy". There is a whole list of gadgets that we have now that first appeared in STAR TREK (Talking Computers, Flip Phones, Medical Scanning Devices, and so forth), but that's not real "Prophecy".
An Authentic Prophet is one who speaks for God to the People.
The Bible has Real Prophets, but also has some False ones. Their common trait is that a "false prophet" says what he or she thinks the people want to hear. This will ensure a happy customer, and perhaps a nice little living can be made from it. The best way to insure a happy customer is to say something TRUE at first, and include a bit of flattery in the mix. Here is an example: A fortune-teller takes the hand of the customer, and feels very specific callouses on the customer's fingertips.
"Ah..." she says soothingly. "You are a creative person, a sensitive person, a deep person ... a MUSICIAN!"
"Why YES!" the customer squeals with delight. "I PLAY GUITAR!"
This kind of "prophet" appears in the Book of 1 Kings 22:11. The King calls together his staff of prophets to decide whether to go into battle. The False Prophets say what they think the King wants to hear:
And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron: and he said, Thus saith the LORD, With these shalt thou push the Syrians, until thou have consumed them. (1 Kings 22:11KJV)
Now, if he had just given the King bad advice, that's all it would be, but this False Prophet said the fatal words: "THUS SAITH THE LORD". It was these four words that changed his false prophecy from mere bad advice to a crime punishable by DEATH. Yes...that was the punishment for a False Prophet in Biblical times! (Deuteronomy 18:20).
We don't go around killing false prophets anymore, but we STILL have to be aware of them and avoid them.
The Apostle John was aware of false prophets in his own community:
4 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. (1 John 4:1-6 KJV)
John is telling us not to believe every prophet, but also not to throw them all out. He's telling us to TEST them. In my own humble opinion, a good way to test the prophet has two phases:
1. Test the Prophecy against Scripture. If it doesn't agree with the Word of God, it's NOT the words of God.
2. If it is a prophecy about a future event within a certain time frame (like a date, or a number of days or weeks, or an event like a lottery or an election) and it doesn't come to pass as prophesied, it is FALSE. No amount of equivocating or backpedaling can change that fact.
I believe that there are real people who are sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit, and are given prophetic words to God's People. I believe that Jesus is the same today as He was for the Apostles. But I ALWAYS apply the "Double Test" for prophets. If False Prophets could plague the Kings of Israel, and even the Apostles, be assured that you and I will run into a bunch of them too!
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. (Mark 4:22)
