Our Father in Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified if Your Most Holy Name!

I vaguely remember a Novelty Song that was going around in the 1970's called "I'm My Own Grandpaw". It turns out that it was a much older song, and, according to Wikipedia, was even covered by The Muppets. The song chronicles a convoluted series of marriages that legally make a man his own (step) Grandfather. It was NOT about "inbreeding", which was my original impression fifty years ago when I heard it. There are now some renditions online that show a video of the increasingly tangled Family Tree that results in a man becoming "His Own Grandpaw".

Further reading in the Wiki article reveals that a similar situation occurred in 1989 with Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones!

Since we don't have a word in English for these awkward relationships, we cobble together the words "step" or "once removed" to describe them. However, in the delightful language of Yiddish, which combines Hebrew with German and other European Languages, there is a term for the in-laws of your in-laws. It is the word Machatonim. While it originally just meant "the parents of your child's spouse", my Mother-In-Law Ruthie used it as a descriptive word to designate ANY family relationship no matter how "removed" it could be. So, a "second-cousin's step-daughter's spouse's third cousin once removed" would still be Machatonim, and Ruthie would be able to trace exactly how the relationship was connected. With a family Tree like that embedded in her memory, there was no need for a DNA Sample to figure out Who's Who!

While it may be legally possible to be one's own Grandpaw, it is biologically impossible, at least at this stage of Genetic Studies. But, as bizarre as it may sound, I don't doubt that there is a person right now applying for a Government Grant to do experiments in that area (((shudder))). As if we need another Frankenstein!

Nevertheless, here is the Glorified Jesus, announcing to John that He is "The Root and Offspring of David". How can He be both the Ancestor of David as well as David's Son?

A clue to this Mystery can be found in the Gospel of John, Chapter 8. The Pharisees are questioning Jesus, and trying to trap Him in His words. At one point, a Pharisee says that Jesus is not even thirty years old, so how could He know Abraham. Jesus replies:

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM.(John 8:58 KJV) Notice that Jesus uses the Present Tense of the Verb "to be" when, grammatically, He should have used the past tense. That is because He was using the Holy Name of God, the Name that was NOT to be spoken out loud, to RELIGIOUS Pharisees. "I AM" says that God transcends the Time-Space Continuum. It expresses Eternity, Infinity, Immortality, Omnipresence, Omniscience, and Omnipotence. At this declaration, the Pharisees picked up rocks to stone Jesus to death for blasphemy.

Jesus existed in Eternity before He was born in Bethlehem. Matthew's Genealogy confirms Him as the SON of David, and the declaration in John 8:58 confirms Him as the ROOT of David. It is the same as saying:

"I am the Ancestor and the Descendant of David."

It's actually makes more sense than the novelty song!
