Oh LORD,
You are Forever Holy and Righteous.
How Excellent is Your Name!
It is You Who Stretched out the Heavens,
And it is You Who laid the Foundations of the Earth.
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise,
and You Alone Are The One True God of Abraham!

Back in the Late 1960's, Boston College had Classic Movie Night every Friday. It was a perfect "cheap date" as the showings were free, and snacks could be had for a few dollars. This became my future husband's and my "Go-To" Place for a Friday Night Date. One night, the movie was something called "Night and Fog". It was the most graphic and horrible documentation of the Holocaust I had ever seen. I had nightmares for years afterward. We had to leave before the movie was over, as I was so shaken up by it. Since it was subtitled, I couldn't even close my eyes!

We let a couple of weeks go by before we dared go back to see another movie I had never heard of, by Ingmar Bergman. I liked "Artsy" stuff, so I figured it would be OK.

The movie was a cheery little flick about Bubonic Plague called "The Seventh Seal". I actually LIKED that movie, and seeing it gave me the background I needed to get all the jokes Hollywood derived from it, including "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey", and Woody Allen's "Love and Death".

Movies, Cartoons, and Memes still quote "The Seventh Seal" to this very day.

Years later, I was giving Vocal Lessons to a Lady who was a few years older than I, and had been born and raised in Greenwich Village, NYC. Because of a confluence of time and space, she had been very active in the Folk Scene in Greenwich Village back in the early 60's, Being a musician who was active in the Coffee Houses of Boston Common a few years later, I was eager to hear her reminisce about this legendary era in 60's music. Yes...she knew Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, and all those other guys and she went on a Blind Date with...of all people...Woody Allen. I asked her how it went.

"It was HORRIBLE!" she said. "He took me to a movie that gave me nightmares ever since. Something called "Night and Fog".

It wasn't until I read the Book of Revelation many years later that I got the meaning of "The Seventh Seal". John, a prisoner on the Island of Patmos, sees a Vision of Heaven and of the Last Days. A Sacred Scroll is presented to him, but nobody is worthy to break open the seven seals which protect the contents. John weeps with frustration, because not even he, an Apostle, a Saint, and a Prisoner for the sake of the Gospel, is Worthy to break the Seals. Then, in the Vision, he sees a Lamb on the Throne, but the Lamb appears as if he has been slain. ONLY the Lamb is Worthy. Then the Seals are broken open, one by one, revealing the devastating events that lead up to The End of The World.

The Lamb is announced as "The LION of the Tribe of Judah". This affirms that the sacrificed, slain Lamb is Alive forever, and is also a LION. The Title affirms the Ancestry of Christ, from the Tribe of Judah. This also coincides with Jacob's Blessing of his son Judah in Genesis 49:

8 Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's children shall bow down before thee.

9 Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?

10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.(KJV)

This paradox between the Lion and the Lamb fits in perfectly with other Names in Scripture:

The King and the Servant
The High Priest and the Sacrificial Victim
The Shepherd and the Lamb
The Beginning and the End
Son of God and Son of Man.

The Importance of a Film like "Night and Fog" is to remind people that the Holocaust Really Happened. It SHOULD give you nightmares. It SHOULD make you run out of the theater weeping with rage and horror. What happened should NEVER happen again.

Maybe it should be Required Viewing on all College campuses these days.
