At least 550 pilgrims have died during the hajj, underscoring the gruelling nature of the pilgrimage which again unfolded in scorching temperatures this year.
At least 323 of those who died were Egyptians, most of them succumbing to heat-related illnesses, the two Arab diplomats coordinating their countries’ responses told AFP.
“All of them [the Egyptians] died because of heat” except for one who sustained fatal injuries during a minor crowd crush, one of the diplomats said, adding that the total figure came from the hospital morgue in the Al-Muaisem neighbourhood of Mecca.
The hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and all Muslims with the means to must complete it at least once.
The pilgrimage is increasingly affected by climate breakdown, according to a Saudi study published last month that said temperatures in the area where rituals are performed were rising 0.4C (0.72F) each decade.
Temperatures hit 51.8Cat the Grand Mosque in Mecca on Monday, the Saudi national meteorology centre said.
...Hosting the hajj is a source of prestige for the Saudi royal family, and King Salman’s title includes “Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques” in the cities of Mecca and Medina.

Mecca is also off caravan routes.
It most likely never existed before the 500s AD
Such a blessing!
Islam is an elaborately constructed Christian heresy with laughable historical flaws.
By the will of Allah, 500 less terrorists.
About 125 degrees.
Yeah, that’s pretty warm.
Trying to care…
51.8C=125.24F
125 degrees can sure expose any weaknesses or susceptibilities you have, age, bad health, starting the day low on hydration and food, that is some rough temps.
sounds like a good start
Muslims need a lot more of these occasions.
I own one of these and one of the smaller version, they are very effective and I recommend them to people in desert climates and motorcyclists who might break down in the desert, 110 degrees will take you out pretty quickly when working on your bike or hiking.

inshallah... إن شاء الله
Did you buy the last one?
I can’t imagine the stench.
Then they had to culturally appropriate the Chinese fire drill.
Do you get bonus points for dying on the hajj? 72 not-quite virgins, or something?
We regularly endured 130+ during the Gulf War, just like the military did in Afghanistan. How these pansies flop over ded at 125 is beyond me.
Well said.
So am I, but I just can’t.
Originally I bought mine at Amazon I think, about 10 years ago, they really work, they can handle the desert high wind and the top is somewhat reflective without disturbing other people’s eyes while the underneath side is black to not reflect the brightness of the sand, the double canopy for dealing with high winds also ventilates it a little.
They seem to be harder to track down than they used to be, especially the more conventional size with the hook handle.
