Just a few days ago, the Internet was ablaze with a story about the discovery of some long-forgotten manuscripts that described some incidents in the life of Jesus when He was a little boy in Egypt. I was eager to read what they had found, and was instantly disappointed when the fragment showed a retelling of an apocryphal tale about clay birds coming to life. This was from the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas, which was discovered with other texts in 1945 in Nag Hammadi, Egypt.

When I worked in the Seminary, it was all the rage. Everybody wanted to read The Gospel of Thomas because it somehow filled a void in these students' lives to "discover" something that the present-day establishment churches had neglected to teach. If it supported Marxism or feminism, even BETTER, as they were looking for was some kind of "secret knowledge", and, like the Philosophers on Mars Hill, they wanted to hear something "new". What they didn't seem to realize was that there is nothing new under the sun. The non-canonical "gospels" were the texts of a movement in the First Century called Gnosticism. That comes from the Greek word for "Knowledge" as in "I Know Something You Don't Know". As if the simple Good News of the Gospel and Jesus Christ aren't enough! (Just for the record, Dan Brown drew his plot for The Da Vinci Code from these non-canonical texts.)

The Story of the Clay Birds was very common in the Early Church, but it was just a story. (It was even quoted in the Koran). We have lots of "Devotional Literature" to this day, which may or may not be inspirational, but are definitely not "Inspired". There's a big difference.

"But these are such Ancient texts! And they were found alongside other texts which ARE recognized as Holy Scripture!" One might say.

Well, the same can be said of The Dead Sea Scrolls. As well as copies of whole canonical Books of the Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls also contain Community Rule Books, Stories about the Final Battle between "The Sons of Darkness and the Sons of Light", and other works of the Essene Sect. Mere proximity to the Bible doesn't make a book "Inspired".

Some people really love the King James Version. Some even think that it is "inspired" the same way the actual Original Manuscripts were inspired by the Holy Spirit. I love the KJV, but I don't hold the view that it is the only correct translation. Some of the Language is archaic and has a different meaning today. My favorite example is "Suffer the Children" upon which I have elaborated before in this Thread. (Hint..."Suffer" in Elizabethan English means "Allow".)

Today's Name is "King of the Saints". Lest we start imagining the traditional "Saints" complete with haloes and qualifying miracles, Let's look at the Original Greek Word: ἔθνος (Ethnos Strong's 1484) It is the word from which we derive the English words "Ethnicity", and "Ethnic", and means PEOPLE. I really don't understand how the KJV got "saints" out of that. Perhaps it means "God's People", ie: "saints".

That's a designation that transcends every Nation, Language, Tribe, and Ethnicity.
