Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD Our God,
How Holy is Your Name over All the Earth!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise.
You Alone Are Holy,
Righteous, and Just,
The One True God of Jerusalem, Israel, the Whole World, and the Universe!
How Awesome You Are,
Sacred and Pure,
That The Angels Praise and Worship you day and Night Eternally!
Set Apart, Distinct from Your Creation
Awesome and So Infinitely Beyond Our poor power to Grasp

The Religious Art of my childhood left me with a lot of questions. One of them concerned a placard posted over the Head of the Crucified Jesus.

"INRI? What does that mean?" I asked Mom.

"That means 'Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews'" Mom replied.

That made me even more puzzled than before. If the Romans realized Jesus was a KING, why did they kill Him? If He was The King of the Jews, why didn't the Jews rescue Him? And, most puzzling of all, wouldn't the initials for "Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews" be "JNKJ"? I didn't dare ask any more questions because the answers would have probably made me even MORE confused!

The Gospel of John 19:19-20 makes it clear:

John 19:19-20 King James Version 19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was Jesus Of Nazareth The King Of The Jews.

20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. (KJV)

It may have looked something like this:



As you can see from the picture, "INRI" would have been the initials in the Latin part of the placard.

We can also note that the sign wasn't devotional in nature, but was snide, disrespectful, and cynical. Pilate had the sign made to mock Jesus, the Pharisees, the Jewish People, and just about everybody else. He made sure that the sign was in three languages: Latin for his own soldiers to see, Greek for the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Intelligentsia, and Aramaic for the regular people.

The Religious Leaders were immediately offended, and wanted the sign taken down., but Pilate was adamant. "What I have written, I have written."

The irony is that, what Pilate wrote in mockery and derision at the END of Jesus' Life, was said in Devotion and Awe at the Beginning of Jesus' life as a Human Being.

Matthew is the only Evangelist that tells the Story of the Magi. Legends and Songs have sprung up over the centuries to embellish the Story, because it is so intriguing that people would like to know more about the "Wise Men". What we know from Scripture is that they observed a Star that led them to Judea. The Star indicated to them that a King was being born in Judea. Like the character in Coming to America, (who deduced that the best place to find a Queen would be in the Borough of Queens NYC), the Magi figured that the Best Place to find The King of the Jews would be in the Royal Palace in Jerusalem.

What they found there was a different "king of the Jews", the evil madman named Herod. Herod wasn't even a real Jew, and he wasn't a real king either. He was a Idumean who had been set up as a puppet by the Roman Occupiers. Nevertheless, he was very jealous of his perceived power and authority, and was greatly disturbed by the Magi's request.

What made things even worse was that the Scholars and Advisors to Herod were able to pinpoint an Ancient Prophecy saying exactly where this REAL King was going to be born. And the Magi said that they had come to WORSHIP him. That would make this Newborn even more than a King. Nobody is worthy of worship except God Himself.

Herod tries to manipulate the Magi into coming back and reporting the location of this new King, but the Magi return home by a different route. What happens next is one of the most tragic events in the New Testament, the Slaughter of the Innocents.

What Pilate had said in mockery and unbelief, was something Herod took very seriously. Neither of them realized that Jesus was not just the "King of the Jews", but of the Romans, the Idumeans, the Greeks, and everybody else.

And the irony is that at the beginning and the end of the life of Jesus on earth His title King of the Jews was proclaimed by Gentiles (the Wise Men and Pilate.)
