Oh LORD, Our God,
How Excellent is Your Holy Name!
You Are The Almighty,

One of the running jokes between me and my husband was my sense of direction. I could find my way around anywhere, even in a foreign city. This was very helpful on Bike Trips, and I always rode point, because I always seemed to know where I was going. Mike used to attribute this to my distant ancestors, who allegedly found their way from Asia to the New World via the Bering Strait. He said I had the "Inuit Sense". On the other hand, he attributed his total LACK of orientation on HIS ancestors who:

"Wandered for Forty Years in the Desert because they were embarrassed to ask directions!"

That was Mike(RIP) with his Borscht Belt Sense of Humor.

One of my all-time favorite movies is The Ten Commandments. I have shared with you more than once my first experience with this movie, sitting in the dark theater alone, eating buttered popcorn and Milk Duds, and getting a schoolgirl crush on John Derek, who played Joshua. Since I was unfamiliar with the Old Testament at the time, I just took it for granted that the Joshua character was in the Exodus Story from the beginning, that he was a Stone-cutter in love with the prettiest girl in the village, and became a Right-Hand-Man to Moses from Day One. A little bit of Bible Education (43 years worth) changed that perspective.

In the real story, Joshua doesn't show up till Chapter 13 in the Book of Numbers, well into the Journey to the Promised Land. Moses delegates twelve spies (one from each tribe) to scope out the Land ahead. The Tribe of Ephraim (a son of Joseph) is represented by Hoshea. This name has the same root as the word "Hosanna", which means "Save Us". Before sending them out, Moses does a strange thing. He changes Hosea's name to "Yoshua" which means "GOD is my Salvation". Lo and Behold, this is the same "Joshua" who becomes Moses's Successor, and his Right-Hand-Man in the forty years to come. Here is the Verse:

These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore the land. But Moses gave Hoshea, son of Nun, the name Joshua.(Numbers 13:16 GW)

Hebrew doesn't have a "J" so this name was probably pronounced "Yoshua" or "Yeshua".

These twelve go out and spy the land, and return with a bunch of grapes that is so huge that it has to be carried by two men, suspended on a pole. Joshua and his friend Caleb from the Tribe of Judah are enthusiastic and full of faith that they can take the land. The other ten, though, are filled with fear.

"Sure", they say, "the Land is good, but the people who live there are GIANTS! We look like grasshoppers compared to them! We can't do it!"

The people believed the fearful majority, and put up such a fuss that they offended God grievously. It was because of that distrust that they ended up wandering in the desert another forty years. Joshua succeeded Moses as their Leader, and it was he who led the People, finally, a generation later, into the Promised Land.

Not too many people name their baby boys "Jesus", but a lot of people name their boys "Joshua". A recent movement within Christianity is to call Jesus by His Hebrew (or Aramaic) Name. These people are not "making up a new name" for Jesus, but just going back to the old one.

Most of us are like people who have no sense of direction. But, it's embarrassing to ask a stranger "Where the heck are we?" (old joke from the Borscht Belt).

Like Joshua from the Old Testament, Jesus shows us the way, but unlike Joshua He IS the WAY. Even if there are giants out there, don't be embarrassed to ask for directions.
