Yesterday was a magnificent day for a bike ride, and so I rode the Harley to both of my lessons. This can only happen for piano lessons, otherwise I would have to bring my guitar. Monday is two piano lessons and are local...no highway driving and warm, breezy, spring weather for a light leather jacket and thin gloves. I also had to go to the Post Office, and my package, purse, and teaching materials fit snugly in my saddlebags.

My students were impressed with my Harley, and it was fun "showing off". I felt like a million bucks, and decided to go out for sushi, even though I can barely afford it.

The Parking lot is a bit hilly, and backing out of a space can be a bit difficult, as most motorcycles do not have a reverse gear. Most riders like to back into the space, so that they can drive straight out after dinner. This is what I usually do, but it's really hard to walk the bike backwards uphill. And the space available was uphill.

To my delight, I saw three vacant parking spaces in a row, which meant I could enter the one on the right, execute a tight U-Turn across the middle space, and park perfectly in the space on the left, facing outwards. It was going to be a tight maneuver on the incline, but I was confident I could negotiate it. Remember, the three forces that hold the Universe together: Gravity, Centrifugal Force, and Inertia all work together to keep the bike upright...as long as you are moving.

I was making the last turn into my chosen spot when I saw something on the ground in front of my front tire. It was butterfly, just sitting there in the sun, stretching out its wings. I carefully swerved to avoid the innocent creature, wiggled the bike into my parking position, dismounted, took off my helmet and gloves, and watched in wonder. The butterfly just sat there the whole time, flapping its wings and enjoying the sunshine.

A man with three little boys watched the whole thing. I showed them the butterfly on the pavement. The boys were amazed that I hadn't crushed it with my tire, or dumped the bike trying to save it.

I wondered if the butterfly was sick or injured, and that's why it didn't fly away, but after dinner (Steamed Shumai and Red Dragon Roll) the butterfly was gone. It had flown away once I had gone inside, I suppose.

I'm am sure my tires crush millions of insects every day, but for some reason, I made a decision to save that butterfly. If I had dumped the bike because of it, it would have really ruined my day. Perhaps God allowed that whole thing to happen just the way it did so I would have the story to tell this morning.

Today's Name for Christ is "The Author of Eternal Salvation". Understanding Salvation takes a whole course in seminary and is called Soteriology. The theories about Salvation are as varied and complicated as it can get. There are even debates within Christianity about it, causing deep divisions. ONE thing is for sure. God is Sovereign. Although it is a poor analogy, we are like the butterfly on the pavement, and there's nothing we can do in our own power to effect our salvation.

The Bible tells us that Jesus is the Author of Our Eternal Salvation. It is one of His Titles. He is the One Who took on the Sins of the World.

All we can do is be overcome with gratitude as we stretch our wings and fly.
