According to an article posted on FR earlier this week, during the Persian occupation of Jerusalem in 614, plans were made to build the Third Temple, which did not materialize because the Byzantines reconquered Palestine.

Ironically the Persians are now the biggest threat to Jewish survival in the Holy Land. (But they probably won't nuke Jerusalem because of the Muslim structures on the Temple Mount.)
