Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem (4/4/24)[Prayer]

The Names and Titles of God (The Great Power))

Acts 8:9—25

9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.

11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.

23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.

24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.

25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

HALLELUJAH!
For The LORD, Our God, The Almighty Reigns!
The Kingdoms of The Earth Are Become
The Kingdom of Our God,
And Of His Messiah!
And He Shall reign Forever and Ever.
King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.
Hallelujah.

We Ask, Oh LORD, That You Will Forgive and Redeem Our Own Nation.
That we may once again enjoy the Blessings of Your Great Bounty.
We Pray That Our Leaders will Turn Their Hearts To YOU,
Or That YOU Shall REMOVE THEM,
In Whatever Way YOU see fit.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

One of my Mom's favorite movies was "The Russians Are Coming." Her favorite line in the movie was when Captain Rosanov (Alan Alda) has just tied up Walt Whittker on the floor of the phone office and says to him:

"Be very good behaved, Vittiker Valt. Otherwise there is World War Three and everybody is blaming YOU!"

Keep reading. You'll see how this relates to Today's Name.

You might have noticed that some of the Names we have studied have their origin in the surrounding Gentile Nations rather than Israel. Sometimes this was used as a teaching tool, like when Paul preached to the Greek Philosophers on Mars Hill.(Acts 17:22-31). In his discourse, Paul refers to The One True God as "The Unknown God", a name he saw on a pagan altar in Athens. If you read the account, you can see how brilliantly Paul uses the Philosophers' own Poetry and Culture to relay his Message.

During the Babylonian Exile, we see Kings and Prophets refer to The One True God as "The Most High". "Most High" indicates more than one. You can't have comparatives or superlatives without more than one. However, this Name was in use already in the Gentile World, so it served the Prophets to use it among them. There IS only ONE, but by designating Elohim as the "Most High", the Prophet was raising Him far above the national gods and goddesses who didn't even come close.

People who attend Self-Help Groups are introduced to a "Higher Power". This is a very nebulous name and could be anybody. It is an unfortunate cultural fact that, in order to include everybody, you end up serving nobody.

This "Higher Power" name was the one used by Simon the Sorcerer when confronted by Peter in Acts Chapter 8. Simon had amazed the residents of his city with his magic and prophecies. When Peter came to town, Simon immediately professed belief and got baptized. He wanted some of this power for himself, as he definitely could see his own influence waning in the town. He saw Peter healing people, delivering people from demons, and speaking with great power and authority. The town wasn't big enough for both of them, but if you can't beat 'em, join 'em

Suddenly, Simon's magic tricks were no longer impressive. That had to change. So he went to Peter and offered him some fast cash to imbue himself with this great power.

Peter's reaction was not at all what he expected.

Peter's rebuke was extremely harsh, and after that, the attempt to purchase religious power is called simony. Imagine going through eternity knowing that an awful sin has been named after YOU! (see above reference to Capt. Rosanov).

Peter was probably given his first clue when Simon the Sorcerer referred to The One True God as "The Great Power" (Not even the "Greatest" or the "Most". Or even the "Higher") By reducing the Personhood of Yahweh, Elohim, or even Jesus, Simon was attributing the work of the Holy Spirit to just a non-personal, non-specific force, like a Star Wars character would do. And then, to think that this "Great Power" could be purchased with money! What an insult.

Peter's response may seem harsh in our "Anything Goes" culture, but I think it was completely appropriate.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. (Mark 4:22)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Actually, it was Philip who baptised Simon the Sorcerer. Not Peter. I apologize for the error.

Psalm 126

A Song of Ascents.

1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,*
we were like those who dream.
2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then it was said among the nations,
‘The Lord has done great things for them.’
3 The Lord has done great things for us,
and we rejoiced.

4 Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like the watercourses in the Negeb.
5 May those who sow in tears
reap with shouts of joy.
6 Those who go out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
carrying their sheaves.

Amen. Agreeing in prayer!

Prayer For Mercy For The Nations

Father, You alone are the almighty God Who is abounding in mercy and loving-kindness. Father, You have shown great patience and long-suffering to so many people down through the centuries and yet we know that Your justified and perfect wrath will one day fall on the nations of this world if we continue to disobey Your laws and turn our backs on the God of our Salvation and His anointed Christ and Saviour Son.

Lord, we have strayed far away from Your ways and have become like a flock of straying sheep without a shepherd. Lord, we have become a rebellious people and we have followed the devises and desires of our own hearts and indulged in the sinful lusts of our fallen flesh. We are not worthy to be called your children. Lord, we confess that we have offended a holy God and we have disregarded Your holy ways. We have been quick to follow in the paths of unrighteousness and have wandered far away from the road of righteousness, that You in Your grace have designed for us to walk in, and Lord, there is no health in us, nor do we deserve Your pity or Your kindness.

But Lord, You have proved down through the centuries that You are a forgiving God and a God of tender-kindness. Slow to anger and of great long-suffering mercies. Oh Lord, we confess our faults and failings, our sins and our rebellions prideful hearts and we pray that You would restore us.

Forgive us Lord, and teach us Your ways. Raise us up again to be a nation that loves and trusts You, and Lord, we pray that one day very soon, You would send You Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to come and take up His eternal rule on earth. Lord, we pray for that day when the earth will be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.

Lord, in Your justice remember mercy we pray. Pity Your creation and draw many out of the miry clay back into Your arms of loving forgiveness. In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
