HE IS RISEN!

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name over all the Earth!
How Wonderful You Are.
How Magnificent,
and How Glorious!
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name,
And from Generation to Generation,
Shall all People Call You Great and Wonderful!

HE IS RISEN!

Yesterday, we contemplated the Name of God which is shared by both Christians and Jews, The Rock of Ages. We listened to the hymns, talked about the meaning of the Name, and discussed several Bible Passages about the Rock with the Cleft in it, from the Great Rock in the Desert which provided Living Water to the Israelites, to the Cleft in The Rock in which Moses was sheltered as God passed by, to, finally, the great Wound in Christ's Side which He received on the Cross.

Few People in the Bible had the kind of experience Moses described in the Book of Exodus. While Some of the Visions of the Prophets Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Zechariah are totally overwhelming, none can be quite as intimate and awesome as God Almighty, covering Moses in the Cleft of the Rock and Passing By. It was so Magnificent that, when Moses came down the Mountain after the experience, there were Rays of Light coming out of his face and head. This dazzling apparition was too much for his fellow Israelites, so Moses had to put a veil over his face when appearing in public. Just imagine if your spiritual leader went up a mountain to talk to God, and came back down with cosmic rays shooting out of his face!

Due to an unfortunate mistranslation of the Hebrew into Latin, these "Rays" became "Horns". That is not as crazy as it seems. The Horns of a bull or a ram were symbolic of Power, Endurance, and Strength. So, when Michelangelo did his research for his Statue of Moses, he very dutifully, (and correctly, he thought), gave Moses a pair of what look like "devil horns".

By now you may be wondering what all this talk of Moses, rays, horns, clefts and rocks has to do with Today's Scripture Passage.

While being hidden in the Cleft of the Rock while God Almighty passes by would be MORE THAN ENOUGH, Moses actually had the additional awesome experience of God speaking directly to him. It is God's way of introducing Himself, personally, to Moses:

6 And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

He goes on to tell Moses that He will not "acquit the guilty". He knows what's going on, and the evil ones will eventually get what's coming to them.

God shows Moses that "Grace without Truth" is meaningless, "Mercy without Justice" is unfair, and "Compassion without Consequences for evil actions" is unjust.

It is an impossible standard for humans, but, with God, All Things Are Possible.
