Pilate's wife doesn't want Jesus to die, nor does Pilate, but the rabid crowd certainly does. Pilate yields, but not without washing his hands to symbolically absolve himself of responsibility.

They sure don’t make art like this anymore.

Disagree. Several current artists are producing gospel masterpieces: Mironov, Qi, Kim, Johnson, McNoughton, Larson, Wienecke....

Wasn’t Jesus subjected to flogging by this time? He looks relatively unharmed in that painting.

Among artists, very few other than Mel Gibson portray realistically the brutality of the scourging Jesus underwent. I have wondered at their reticence and have arrived at no satisfactory explanation.

There she is! Claudia and I didn’t have to wait long for this painting.
Thank you, Dan, wishing you and your family a blessed Holy Week.

Posting multiples per day in order to get Jesus into the tomb before Sunday.

Painters were sensitive in not depicting too brutal images of the Passion of Christ, they would have been too intimidating and repulsive to the people. It was better to magnify his being innocent and undeserving of such torments. I, for one, do not need to be shocked by blood and gore to fully appreciate and be grateful for God’s gift to humanity.

Understood. Still, they’re willing to show Him enduring the excruciating agony on the cross, as we’ll see, which seems like a distinction without a difference.

They couldn’t not show the crucifixion. Remember too that traditions and styles changed in time. They needed to show more of Christ’ suffering to share with the viewers the strong emotions of guilt, intense pity and grief.
Look at the Fra Angelico Crucifixion; he magnifies the emotional responses of the figures around Christ’s solitary cross: the Virgin Mary falls to the ground, Saint John clasps his hands intensely, Mary Magdalene reaches out in a sharply foreshortened view, angels lament against the gold ground of the sky....very powerful, very poignant..it still involve our own emotions.

I think it is a Calvinist over-reaction to what was perceived as "Catholic"

Much of the post-Lutheran churches veered away from the suffering of the Christ. I blame it as an over-reaction to "not be Catholic"

For that to be the case, wouldn’t that require those artists to be Protestants rather than Catholics? Surely some were, but....
