Pretty much anybody born at any time, until the 20th century, would not have found his life too different from all other points in history. It’s only been the 20th century that has been really, really different.

Not quite - things began to change at the end of the 1700s:

• Industrialization
• 2nd stage Globalization
• the rise of nation-states and senses of nationhood

Also what you point out does not hold true for most areas of the word -- Eurasia developed far faster than the Americas/Australia/sub-saharan africa as Eurasia had "guns, germs and steel"
