Episcopal Priest Loses Jeopardy! Tournament After Being Stumped on Bible Question

An Episcopal priest competing in a Jeopardy Tournament failed to advance to the finals, the result of falling badly behind and also being stumped by a question on the New Testament, according to the Episcopal News Service.

David Sibley is the LGBTQ+ affirming rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Walla Walla, Washington, who recently participated in a Jeopardy Tournament.

He previously competed in 2022, where he won $79,098 through four straight episodes. During that contest, he failed to answer a $1000 question: “It’s the ascension heavenward by true Christians both living and dead at Christ’s second coming.”

Rather than a buzz in “What is the rapture,” he let the answer pass him by, later explaining on Reddit:

“Here’s the thing—I don’t believe in the rapture. In fact, most Christians don’t hold the rapture as a doctrine and haven’t for most of church history—the literal reading of Revelation is a product of the modern era, not the patristic era. As written, I thought the clue’s correct response required “Christians” to mean all Christians (or at least all Christians other than tiny splinter groups). It was too late when I got to what they wanted.”

However, he was never in serious contention during this match, with a competitor taking an early insurmountable lead. During ‘Final Jeopardy’ the category was ‘New Testament,’ and the contestants were asked: “This city now in Turkey is the addressee of one of the New Testament epistles & the setting for ‘The Comedy of Errors.'”

Sibley guessed “Corinth,” whereas the correct answer was “What is Ephesus.”

So, he couldn’t answer because he didn’t like the answer and couldn’t mouth it?

Well...

Matthew 3:13–17 ESV

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.
16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

I think where we Christians get our 'trinity' from is found in the statements of the Jews earlier:

Deuteronomy 6:4  Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.

Which is reinforced by Jesus' own words:

Mark 12:28-31
28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments [is], Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is  one  Lord:
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this [is] the first commandment.
31 And the second [is] like, [namely] this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

But; how do we reconcile this ONE god thing with other verses that indicate that Jesus and the Holy Spirit have GOD-like powers as well?

Didn't Genesis say, "Let US create man in OUR image?  Surely there are TWO gods here; right?

Shouldn't  the Jews have had a belief that there were at LEAST two gods?

Didn't the Jews try to STONE Jesus for saying He was GOD??

John 10:31-42

31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”

33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”

Logically; it would seem to me that if this 'ONE GOD' that the Jews claim to worship is truly one entity; then the Father; the Holy Ghost and Jesus have to be parts of it.

Sure; verses can be shown where Jesus prays to the Father; says that there are things that only the Father knows; but remember, all of these were done while Jesus had a human fleshly body to reside in.

Bottom line:

John 10:30   "I and the Father are One."

Find rapture in the Bible. I’ll give you ten years.

Find *pope*, *cardinal*, *catechism*, *purgatory*, *eucharist*, *confessional*, *scapular*, *rosary*, *monstrance*, *holy water*, *sacraments*, *immaculate conception*, *assumption*, *crucifix*, *Mediatrix*, *Benefactrix*, *dulia*, *limbo*, *excommunication*, *incarnation*, *mass*, *crucifix*, *transubstantiation*, to name a few.

If the term *rapture* is to be disqualified because the word itself doesn't appear as English speaking Catholics think it should, then the Catholic church is LOADED with terms that are disqualified because they aren't in Scripture either.

Pray to advance in holiness, and for other important purposes, certainly.

But to obtain forgiveness, absolution?

There’s a sacrament for that.

I lose no love over what the ECUSA has become. But I agree that the popular concept of a “rapture” is not Biblically accurate.

I bet a classically educated atheist apologist, such as Richard Dawkins, could do better on the Bible quiz than this priest of Sodomy.

I feel worthless.

What must I do to be saved?

Would you care to elaborate on it?

Seek out an ordained Catholic priest and ask to begin the process of entering Holy Mother Church. If not yet baptized in accordance with the Trinitarian formula, that would certainly be an important goal in the near or medium term, according to what the priest advises. Keep in mind that only members of the One True Faith have recourse to the Sacrament of Penance, miraculous and truly humbling. So focus on that.

One exception, of course! (Behold your mother.)

Find rapture in the Bible. I’ll give you ten years.

Um...you know the Bible wasn't written in English, right? In fact, the English language wouldn't even come into existence until 1500 years or so later! Like MANY theological beliefs, it is the concept that is taught in Scripture. The term "rapture":

Rapture is a state or experience of being carried away. The English word comes from a Latin word, rapio, which means to seize or snatch in relation to an ecstasy of spirit or the actual removal from one place to another. In other words, it means to be carried away in spirit or in body. The Rapture of the church means the carrying away of the church from earth to heaven.

The Greek word from this term “rapture” is derived appears in 1 Thessalonians 4:17, translated “caught up.” The Latin translation of this verse used the word rapturo. The Greek word it translates is harpazo, which means to snatch or take away. Elsewhere it is used to describe how the Spirit caught up Philip near Gaza and brought him to Caesarea (Acts 8:39) and to describe Paul’s experience of being caught up into the third heaven (2 Cor. 12:2-4). Thus there can be no doubt that the word is used in 1 Thessalonians 4:17 to indicate the actual removal of people from earth to heaven. (https://bible.org/question/where-did-term-8216rapture%E2%80%99-come)

Do you deny that there WILL be a catching away of believers from the earth to heaven? Maybe you disagree about the timing, but there's no denying that Jesus DID say He would come again and receive believers unto Himself that where He is, there we will be also. Was He lying?

Also referred to as: Sacrament of Reconciliation, Confession.

This from a webpage authored by the Fraternal Society of Saint Pius the Tenth (commonly referred to as the SSPX):

__________

The forgiveness of sin.

There is no man upon earth without sin; consequently there is none who does not need the forgiveness of sin. If we say we have no sin, the truth is not in us. God permits us to fall into venial sin again and again, to keep us humble. As we sin daily, we must daily ask for the forgiveness of sin in the Our Father. Without the succour of special grace it is impossible to avoid venial sin for any length of time.

We can obtain forgiveness of sin, because Christ merited it for us by the death of the cross; and because He gave power to forgive sins to His apostles and their successors.

There is nothing more consoling for mankind upon earth than the forgiveness of sins, for nothing causes us more misery than sin. Even in pagan times Socrates looked forward hopefully to the advent of a mediator who would teach mankind in what manner remission of sins was to be obtained. Christ earned the grace of forgiveness for us by His sacred Passion and death upon the cross. Christ is the Lamb of God, Who taketh away the sins of the world; in Him we have redemption through His blood, the remission of sins. Christ is the propitiation for our sins and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. Christ conferred the power to forgive sins only upon the Apostles and their successors. He himself exercised this power when He healed the paralytic He said expressly “That you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, I say unto thee, take up thy bed and go”. This same power which He possessed Our Lord gave to the holy apostles, when after His resurrection He said to them: “receive ye the Holy Ghost, whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven, and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained”.

In the Catholic Church alone is remission of sins, for she alone has received the Holy Ghost as a pledge of this grace.

When preparing for Confession, adults in the One True Faith typically put themselves through what is called an Examination of Conscience.

This helps us to avoid failing to account for all of our sins, whether mortal or venial, committed since our last confession, all of which we will wish privately and confidentially to tell the priest (a.k.a. our “confessor”).

Here is a guide for a very thorough Examination of Conscience (I believe Catholic priest and exorcist Father Chad Ripperger may have authored it) that This Guy has used:

... superstition (ascribing powers to a created thing which it does not have); ...

Like THIS??

The 15 promises

(Given to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche)

1Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall receive powerful graces.
2.I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.
3.The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies
4.It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of people from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
5.The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.
6.Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying Himself to the consideration of its Sacred Mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise Him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life.
7.Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the Church.
8.Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plentitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the Saints in Paradise.
9.I  shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.
10.The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven.
11.You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary.
12.All those who propagate the Holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.
13.I  have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of death
14.All who recite the Rosary are my children, and brothers and sisters of my only Son, Jesus Christ.
15.Devotion of my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.

"The Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary to such an extent that there is no problem,

no matter how difficult it is, wheter temporal or above all spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families...that cannot be solved by the Rosary.

There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary."

Sister Lucia dos Santos
