Before STAR TREK debuted on Television, out favorite TV show was COMBAT!, starring Vic Morrow and Rick Jason.

This gritty drama was set in the European Theater in WW2 and followed a squad of American Soldiers as they fought the Nazis. Dad, my little brother Tom, and I would eagerly await each new episode. By far, my favorite episode, which I remember to this day, was aired in early 1963 when I was ten years old. It was called "Gideon's Army". (Go to the COMBAT! link above for reference)

I did not know the story of Gideon from the Bible, so I had no idea what to expect from the title.

The Biblical Gideon was a simple farmer, who, led by God, freed his People from oppressors who had taken over their land. Gideon was a very reluctant warrior with few resources, but God whittles down even the meager army Gideon has thrown together until there are only 300 men left against and army of thousands. When Gideon's Army sows discord and confusion, the Enemy Army turns against itself, and the Israelites emerge victorious.

The COMBAT! Episode showed the small band of heroes and survivors using the tactics from the Old Testament Story to rout a vastly superior number of Germans when the little group is surrounded.

I loved that Episode, but when I asked an adult who "Gideon" was, I was told that he was a man who supplied Bibles to Hotel Rooms. A few years later, in 1968, the Beatles sang a strange song that seemed to confirm that notion

That explained the Hotel Bibles, but still didn't shed light on the COMBAT! Episode. Unfortunately, the Old Testament (except for the Movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "David and Bathsheba" were not big in our household. It wasn't till years later that I read the Story of Gideon, which appears in Chapter 6 of the Violent, Bloody, and Disturbing Book of Judges. (Samson is in there too, plus an heroic woman who nails a guy's head to the floor (Judges 4)

Judges is a tough Book to read because the People in it "Do What Is Right in Their Own Eyes". They have no Leadership, no Law and Order, no Guidance, and no Peace. Even though they are IN the Promised Land, and have The Ten Commandments, as well as a Place where the Arc of the Covenant is housed, they choose to go their own way and ignore God. Chaos, Bloodshed, and Oppression from Outsiders becomes the prevailing lifestyle.

Deborah, Gideon, Samson, and a few others take up the reins of leadership and serve as Judges (hence the name of the Book). But even these heroes succumb to sin, because they are human, after all.

Real Peace, comes with trust in the One True God, and that Peace is found in Today's Hebrew Name for Him "YHVH-Shalom", or "God is our PEACE".
