Almighty God,
Blessed is Your Most Holy Name!
Your Alone Are Worthy of Our Worship,

The Names and Titles of God (Adonai)

Genesis 15:2

"Adonai" is one of the Titles of God, rather than one of His Names. It means "Lord". It is a Title of Honor and Respect.

In many of the older English Translations of the Bible, you will see "the LORD" written in all Upper Case. This is not "Adonai", but, rather, it is a way of avoiding writing out the Tetragrammaton, which we will be discussing tomorrow. Since The Name of God is so sacred, many Jewish Prayers substitute "Adonai" for God's Memorial Name.

In our own culture we often do the same thing, as in "Praise the Lord" or "The Lord Bless You."

Sometimes we see "lord" all in lower case. That would be directed to another human being in authority, such as "the lord of the manor". It works the same with Adonai.

1. lower case (lord) a title for a human
2. Initial Capital L (Lord) a respectful title for the One True God
3. All Caps (the LORD) a respectful substitution for God's Holy Name.

Since Hebrew doesn't have Upper and Lower Case, it is not as clear in the Original, but it is very helpful in reading the Old Testament in English Translation.

In Today's Reading, Abraham is questioning God, not in a bad way, but just to know more of what is to happen. He respectfully calls God "Lord God" which, in the Hebrew is Adonai YHVH. Although Abraham is "arguing" a bit, he is being totally respectful. His Faith is not failing, but he is just struggling to understand, as he is in his 90's and still childless. Like the Virgin Mary at the Annunciation, Abraham is asking "How Can This Be?"

Neither Abraham nor Mary were "biologists" but they knew about life, and the only way either of them would have a son would take a MIRACLE.
