Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

The Scriptures In Handel’s Messiah

Romans 8:31, 33-34

31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.

(King James Version)

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Dear Heavenly Father,
How Wonderful is Your Most Holy Name!
We Worship You,
And You Alone,
For You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The Most HIGH!
You Alone Are The One,
Who Banishes Fear.
For If You Be With Us,
Who Can Possibly Stand Against Us?
You Are Our Peace,
Our Wholeness,
Our Shalom,
Our Security,
Our Prosperity,
and Our Future.
And You Give Us Victory over the Grave.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

______________________________________________

As most of you know already, I started learning to play guitar back in 1963 when I was 11 years old. At the time, my Dad was into "Folk" music, which wasn't "Folk" Music at all, but the work of modern singer-songwriters who drew upon the real folk music of England, Mexico, and the USA to produce a genre which, for a while, eclipsed Blues, R&B, and Rock and Roll. Dad had records of The Kingston Trio, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and the Highwaymen. Most of these songs had only three chords, no bridge, and were repetitive, so they were easy to learn. Dad didn't like Bob Dylan so much, but I did. His songs were so easy that, if I could remember the lyrics, I could perform them instantly.

Then, one evening, the 60th Anniversary of which I will observe tomorrow on February 9th, the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. I loved their music, but they used a whole lot more than three chords.

One thing I really liked about the Beatles was that they didn't seem to have a Political Agenda like the Folk Genre did. That made their music a lot more fun to sing, instead of the dour, angry, "Protest Songs" of the Early Sixties.

Ironically, my current Repertoire contains both Beatles and Dylan songs. Not only does mine, but 90% of the entertainers in my area do songs from the 1960's and 70's. It even has a new Genre Name. It's called "Classic Rock". Who knew?

The reason for this long introduction is that Dylan had a song way back in the day called "With God on Our Side". It was anti-war and anti-military, seven minutes long and (ahem, sorry Bob) very boring. But it does make a point that, in a war, everybody thinks that God is on their side.

Now, let's listen to Today's Aria from the Messiah.

If God Be For Us.

Is the Soprano actually singing "God is on our side"? That seems a little bit like the hubris of medal-bespangled general in the War Room in the movie Dr. Strangelove.

Does God really take sides in a war? From the Dawn of Time, Nations have gone to War with the Slogan "God is on Our Side", but How Many times has that actually been TRUE? God is only on the Side of Those Who Place Their Trust in Him. There are numerous examples in the Bible of the Israelites storming off to Battle in their own strength, and end up being defeated. Then there are other examples of a Warrior(such as Gideon) with very few resources, Trusting totally in God and receiving Victory from His Hand.

The Battle in The letter to the Romans is a Spiritual battle. We wrestle, not with flesh and blood, but with serried ranks of spiritual enemies. Therefore, our weapons can't be the ones that the world offers, such as pop psychology, cleverness, will-power, or mantras. But if we are With Him, and In Him, and Through Him, we can do all things through Christ Who Strengthens Us.

So the solution to this puzzle is simple. It is not "Is God on My Side?", but rather "Am I On God's Side?"

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Psalm 34

Of David, when he feigned madness before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.

1 I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and be glad.
3 O magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me,
and delivered me from all my fears.
5 Look to him, and be radiant;
so your* faces shall never be ashamed.
6 This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord,
and was saved from every trouble.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps
around those who fear him, and delivers them.
8 O taste and see that the Lord is good;
happy are those who take refuge in him.
9 O fear the Lord, you his holy ones,
for those who fear him have no want.
10 The young lions suffer want and hunger,
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

11 Come, O children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 Which of you desires life,
and covets many days to enjoy good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil,
and your lips from speaking deceit.
14 Depart from evil, and do good;
seek peace, and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
and his ears are open to their cry.
16 The face of the Lord is against evildoers,
to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears,
and rescues them from all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to the broken-hearted,
and saves the crushed in spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord rescues them from them all.
20 He keeps all their bones;
not one of them will be broken.
21 Evil brings death to the wicked,
and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants;
none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
