Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

The Scriptures In Handel’s Messiah

Isaiah 53:4-5

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

(King James Version)

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven
How it hurts to be despised by the very ones we love!
My Heart aches for parents whose children have turned against them,
Or for Good People who are despised by the very ones they attempt to help.
None of this is even close to what You must experience,
When the people You created despise their Creator,
And Despise Life Itself.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

One of the coolest paint jobs on a car or motorcycle is pin-striping. My own bike has lovely pin-striping along the tank, ending in a Celtic Knot . It actually is the factory paint job, but, originally, pinstripes were the mark of a very fast racing car, taking a tight corner and scraping the side of the car against the wall. It was a wound in the paint job. A scratch like that on the side of the racing car denoted a very daring driver.

Cars now come off the Assembly Line with the pin-striping already applied. So the word "Stripes" has a different meaning now than it did back in the days of the King James Version.

One of the most wonderful qualities of Handel's Messiah is how the Composer created Word Pictures with his Music. As if Isaiah 53 isn't "graphic" enough, listen to verses 4-5: Surely He Hath Borne Our Griefs. Now, even if you don't read music, follow the notes as you listen. The instrumental into sounds just like you are climbing a hill with a heavy weight. Even the notes look like that. Then the vocals start. Look at the notes for "Surely". They come down like a whip. This happens again with the words "The Chastisement".

Instead of expressing Isaiah 53 in one song, Handel stretches it out, line by line, with separate solos and choruses for each painful verse. Was this just a response to the way Mr. Jennens presented the Scriptures? Or was it perhaps Handel's own way of depicting the many hours of the Passion, minute by agonizing minute?

One word, "Surely", takes a whole musical phrase to articulate, and then, it is sung AGAIN. Then the chorus intones:"He hath Boourrrnnn ourrrrr Grieeeeeef", and "caaarried our sorrows". And then they sing it again. One can almost feel the anguish in the singing.

Now listen to this: With His Stripes

"Stripes" are the long, bloody wounds left by a whip as it streaks down upon the flesh, and there were a lot of them on Jesus. The Romans were not respectful of the Jewish Law that mandated that the lashes stop at 39.

What took two hours to portray in a movie is depicted in two short choruses of Handel's Messiah, not only in the music, but in the notation as well.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Psalm 150

1 Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty firmament!*
2 Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his surpassing greatness!

3 Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!
4 Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!
5 Praise him with clanging cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
6 Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!
