Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

The Scriptures In Handel’s Messiah
Isaiah 53:3
29 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Isaiah 50:6
6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.
(King James Version)

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Dear Jesus,
You Are Our Great High Priest,
And You Are The Sacrificial Offering.
You Are The King of Kings,
And Your Are The Suffering Servant.
You Are The Shepherd,
And You Are The Lamb.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

When the Verses of Isaiah were first read to me, over forty years ago, I just assumed that they were the words of Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. After all, it described the Passion and Death of Jesus so perfectly. The anguish of the Despised and Rejected Messiah being spat upon, beaten and tortured to death on the Cross comes through in every line. Then someone told me that this was from the OLD Testament. Sure enough, I looked it up in a Hebrew Bible (which arranges the Books differently, so it was a chore!), and there it was.
Over the Centuries, liberal scholars have attempted to downplay the significance of Isaiah 53. Some say that there were more than one "Isaiah". Others say that these key chapters had been added to Isaiah long after the Crucifixion had taken place...a sort of "redacting" Scripture to prove a point.
However, those theories came crashing to the ground with the sound of smashed pottery. In 1948, a Bedouin Shepherd Boy was looking for a lost goat. (Hmmmm....sound familiar?) He came to a deep cave near the Dead Sea and tossed a rock into it for safety. The rock smashed some pottery and that was the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
The most intact and perfect scroll was the Book of Isaiah. Although it was not divided up into Chapters and Verses, there were the words of Isaiah 53, in a scroll that was written before Jesus was born.
Magnificent and Heartrending words, but how on earth could ANYONE set these words to music? Especially for something that had not been written "for Church", but as "entertainment"?
Pardon the intentional pun, but, in my humble opinion, there is only one guy who could "Handel" such a task.
He Was Despised.
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

I know! I was really impressed.
Did you notice that, in the 30 years between the first performance and the second, her voice became less heavy and much brighter? I love her mature voice even more than her youthful voice.
Usually it’s the other way around. LOL.

Yes I did. I too like her mature voice better.

When I train Vocalists, I compare the Timbre to a balance between “Chocolate” (The deep dark, resonating quality of the voice) with “Champaign” (The Bright Sparkling, Clear, and bubbly overtones). Too much Chocolate and the voice becomes dark and heavy, too much Champagn and it becomes shrill. This lady has the perfect balance in her “Mature Voice”.
My Teacher studied with Renatta Scotto so I’m in good company with my “theories”. :-)

That is such a cool description of the voices using chocolate and champagne.
A new word to look up “Timbre” Thank you ML

Thank you...I came up with that myself, along with a lot of other “word pictures” to teach Voice.
One of my little tricks for getting proper vocal placement in the head was to tell my student to “point and click” (like a computer mouse) to the place where he or she wanted the voice to go.
We are so trained at clicking a mouse and getting what we want, that the Vocal Placement became almost instant.
I haven’t taught voice in a long time, but I had some amazing students in Florida about a decade ago.
One thing I never had to worry about was it being too COLD to sing! Ha Ha Ha.

Psalm 98
A Psalm.
1 O sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvelous things.
His right hand and his holy arm
have gained him victory.
2 The Lord has made known his victory;
he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the victory of our God.
4 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
break forth into joyous song and sing praises.
5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
with the lyre and the sound of melody.
6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn
make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.
7 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
the world and those who live in it.
8 Let the floods clap their hands;
let the hills sing together for joy
9 at the presence of the Lord, for he is coming
to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
and the peoples with equity.
