Recall Rome had no problems torturing and putting to death the Reformers.
The crimes of the Inquisition, while some did occur, have also been exaggerated by anti-Catholic propagandists.
That was pretty much mutual. Look what the “Church” of England did to the Catholics. Those were very different times, which did not enjoy the niceties of today.
Which, of course, are not really so nice all the time, but that’s another story.
Actually, it was the Reformatters like Calvin and Luther who tortured and put to death other reformatters like Servetus or the Anabaptists.
And there were quite a few Catholics put to death by Calvinists, Anglicans, Lutherans etc.
These murders by all sides were wrong - by today’s standards and also by the standards of their own day and even more so by Christ’s standards.
