GABRIEL'S AMAZING NEWS FOR MARY
|
L U K E CHAPTER 1 God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.” “I AM THE LORD’S SERVANT,” Mary answered. “MAY IT BE TO ME AS YOU HAVE SAID.” Then the angel left her.

Deep and brilliant colors, dramatic intensity, elaborate patterns on the borders, from the centuries old to the modern ones, stained glass windows are testament to the human imagination and artistry. It is a great joy studying and researching the history of these windows.
Thank you, Dan.

#95 almost modern art cubist, #112 so complex I can’t imagine how it was done, #116 you have to study it awhile to see all that is there.

You singled out several of the windows I find most interesting, too.
I find myself surprised by the variety of artistic expressions.

I like it.
#99, in particular: Gabriel looks masculine, as he ought.

#98, the small images show scenes from Mary’s life with Jesus.
Top left, she’s holding His Body, just taken down from the cross. See also numerous “pieta” sculptures. Top Right she’s in the upper room with the Apostles at Pentecost. Lower left Jesus is carrying the cross. Lower right Jesus is crucified, with Mary and Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross. There appear to be more such panels below, but cut off in the photograph.

The complexity of some of the great cathedrals’ images is overwhelming. No subject other than Christ has ever generated even a fraction of the devotion that we see all around us.

No subject other than Christ has ever generated even a fraction of the devotion Indeed. One might note that most stained glass, icons, and statues in the sorts of Churches that feature such things do not depict The Father, The Son, or The Holy Ghost. However ... the people they do depict only matter because those people were radically faithful servants of God. So, in the end it all points straight to Our Lord.
(Exception to this include the lurid depictions of Hell that some Italians favored. Even that has the message of salvation in it: "In case you're wondering what Jesus saves you from, take a look ...")

I am especially fond of #132
it is not the most detailed
but it is very refreshing.
I can rest my eyes in the calm -
our Sabbath rest to come.
And I can soak up light
that radiates from Gabriel,
the angel from On High.

It seems to capture what Mary must have felt in his presence.
