Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Acts 19

The Riot in Ephesus

23 About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way. 24 A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there. 25 He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business. 26 And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all. 27 There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”

28 When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29 Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia, and all of them rushed into the theater together. 30 Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him. 31 Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.

32 The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there. 33 The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front, and they shouted instructions to him. He motioned for silence in order to make a defense before the people. 34 But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

35 The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians, doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? 36 Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash. 37 You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess. 38 If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges. 39 If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly. 40 As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.” 41 After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven
Hallowed be Your Most Holy Name!
How We Long For Your Kingdom,
How We Wait For Your Will to be Done,
Here on Earth, as it Already is, in Heaven!
You Know Us Inside and Out,
And We Can Hide Nothing From You.
Teach us that Prosperity Alone is Not Enough.
That Good Health and Fitness are Inadequate when Speaking About Eternal Life,
Open Our Eyes, and the Eyes of those in Power,
That We might Seek You.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

I had no idea what to buy my 11-year-old twin grand nephews for Christmas, and their dad told me that they were getting very interested in Greek Mythology. I remembered fondly my own enjoyment of Myths and Legends when I was that age, and I found some great books full of stories of Hercules, Jason, and other iconic characters that helped define Western Civilization. What is important, of course, is that they see these stories as part of our Culture, not our "Religion". I think they are mature enough to make that distinction.

One of my favorite Mythological Characters was Diana. She was the Roman goddess of hunting, and wore a rather fetching, short, off-the-shoulder tunic that gave her plenty of flexibility to run and shoot her bow and arrow. She didn't have a boyfriend, she was independent, and very cool. I knew that the Greeks liked Diana too, only they called her "Artemis". Imagine my horror when, while touring the Greek Section of the Museum of Fine Arts, I saw this ugly, bloated statue of a woman covered from head to toe with bare breasts. I was SO embarrassed! Then I looked at the sign next to the statue. It was Artemis! My Nimble, Brave, Independent Diana had been turned into a fat cow! Actually, chronologically, it was the other way around, but my childlike mind was scandalized. This was "Artemis of the Ephesians", and this was a prototype of the main product of Demetrius The Silversmith.

People came from everywhere to see the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. (It's interesting to note that only ONE of the Seven Wonders still exists, the Great Pyramid).

Art has always been bound to Religion throughout the Centuries. The great Cantatas of J.S.Bach were all dedicated in writing to The "Glory of God", and the Masters of the Renaissance painted and sculpted religious themes for their patrons as the main part of their livelihood. Indeed, some of the most wonderful art in history adorns the ceilings and walls of Churches and Temples. The Ancient World was no different, and Archaeologists are always digging up religious artifacts. In fact, they are often hard-pressed to find the remains of ordinary every-day-life articles and end up digging at ancient latrines and trash dumps to find the remains of pottery and metal.

That being said, art was supposed to inspire people to pray to God, not be the object of worship in and of itself. And that was the problem with Demetrius The Silversmith of Ephesus. He was in the business of producing objects of worship, and Paul was really putting a dent in his receipts. As a skilled silversmith, Demetrius could have gradually moved into making other silver items, like ewers, pitchers, cutlery, bowls, and jewelry. But his Artemis Statues were a hot seller, and easy to reproduce, and appealed to people's need for "the sacred", so why should HE have to be the one to change?

And so, like some kind of "community organizer", Demetrius gathers as many people together and appeals to their religious nature and loyalty to Artemis in order to attack Paul. Of course, they come up with a slogan, and stir up the crowd, and end up involving Law Enforcement.

Paul had never attacked Demetrius directly, but his preaching was causing fewer sales of Artemis Statues just by attrition. Even so, Demetrius took this as a personal affront and was determined to destroy Paul.

Although this was 2000 years ago, human nature doesn't seem to change much.

Psalm 149

1 Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord a new song,
his praise in the assembly of the faithful.
2 Let Israel be glad in its Maker;
let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.
3 Let them praise his name with dancing,
making melody to him with tambourine and lyre.
4 For the Lord takes pleasure in his people;
he adorns the humble with victory.
5 Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing for joy on their couches.
6 Let the high praises of God be in their throats
and two-edged swords in their hands,
7 to execute vengeance on the nations
and punishment on the peoples,
8 to bind their kings with fetters
and their nobles with chains of iron,
9 to execute on them the judgement decreed.
This is glory for all his faithful ones.
Praise the Lord!

Oh my, Artemis truly is a horrible demonic creature! What are those creepy little drain things all over it? Amazing what people will worship.
