Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Acts 18

Priscilla, Aquila and Apollos

18 Paul stayed on in Corinth for some time. Then he left the brothers and sisters and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. Before he sailed, he had his hair cut off at Cenchreae because of a vow he had taken. 19 They arrived at Ephesus, where Paul left Priscilla and Aquila. He himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to spend more time with them, he declined. 21 But as he left, he promised, “I will come back if it is God’s will.” Then he set sail from Ephesus. 22 When he landed at Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem and greeted the church and then went down to Antioch.

23 After spending some time in Antioch, Paul set out from there and traveled from place to place throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

24 Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor[a] and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.

27 When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers and sisters encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. 28 For he vigorously refuted his Jewish opponents in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Messiah.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven
Hallowed Your Most Holy Name!
We Worship You and Love You.
For You Alone Are Worthy
And You Alone are The One True God!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Well, Bless Her Wee Little Dingo Heart, Tippy allowed me to sleep in till 7:00AM this morning! Usually she has me up at 5:00, demanding that I take her to work (chasing deer, squirrels, and rabbits, and doing our obstacle course in the cold November Sunrise), but for some arcane reason, she allowed me to sleep another TWO HOURS. So that's why I am late today with the Thread.

Back in the 1950's, there was a gloomy group of buildings a few miles from my Childhood Home. We called this place "Mattapan" but it was actually Boston State Hospital. . Because we were woefully uninformed about the state of Psychiatric Health, our scary stories always included an escaped "Maniac from Mattapan", stalking the neighborhood, jumping out of the bushes, and stealing us away. We averted our eyes when Dad drove by, and, as it was right on the route to Downtown, The Franklin Park Zoo, and my Grandparents' home in Dorchester, we went by it a LOT. (brrrrrrrr)

Sometime around 1966, when I was in the Ninth Grade, my Dear Friend Diana invited me to go caroling with her Baptist Youth Group. She asked me to bring my guitar and accompany the Carolers. Well, that sounded like an awesome gig even if it meant learning a bunch of the "holy" Christmas Songs, which all have a LOT more than THREE CHORDS! EEK. However, duty called, and I learned the songs. There was no internet at the time, so I just had to play and try different chords until I found the ones that fit. Then, to top things off, I wrote a little song for the event, in a minor key to sound "Oriental", about the Three Wise Men.

We all piled into the Church Bus and headed over to our destination which turned out to be "Building H", the Chronic Ward at Mattapan. It was everything you would expect "Bedlam" to be. With only waist-high walls separating the rows and rows of beds, the patients were in various stages of undress, screaming and babbling and seeming not to be listening. Nevertheless, we soldiered on, sang the carols, and then I sang my song. I never forgot the song and recorded it in 2001. You can hear that recording Here (Bethlehem c 1966,2001). As we were leaving, an attendant came up to us with tears in his eyes, and said "Thank You. They LOVED you." I know you can't see it, but I can."

Last night, at our usual Tuesday Open Mike, I already had my three songs picked out, and wasn't planning on doing any Christmas Songs until at least December. However, we walked into the place to see all the Waitresses wearing elf-hats and decorating a gorgeous Christmas Tree right where I was going to be singing. Our buddies used the Christmas Tree to launch into "Jingle Bell Rock", and "All I Want For Christmas is You", so I ended up doing only two of the songs I had planned on, and finished up with "Bethlehem".

We ended up getting home late, and that's why I'm late this morning.

This story may not seem relevant to today's Reading in the Book of Acts, but it does connect for me. Paul had his message and took it to both friendly and hostile places. We will see that as he arrives in Ephesus. He also meets with some wonderful people and forms lasting friendships with them. Aquila and Priscilla had been kicked out of their home in Rome for the simple fact that they were Jews. Now they were in exile, but they immediately got to work in their trade, took Paul in to live with them, and started a church in their home. From the text, it can be inferred that their marriage, trade, and ministry were equal partnerships. Their friendship with Paul lasted a lifetime, and Paul even greets them in the close of his very last letter from Rome.

We will see tomorrow how Priscilla and Aquila help instruct a new friend who arrives from the intellectual center of Alexandria.

Intellectual Knowledge of God is awesome, but it needs to go deeper.

The Christ Child can be miles and miles away, or as near as your heart.

Come and Pray For Your Prayers For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

I stumbled on this online recently. It’s the book of Acts narrated, with chapter and verse references posted at the different scenes.

It’s LONG, but actually very good.

Psalm 70

To the leader. Of David, for the memorial offering.

1 Be pleased, O God, to deliver me.
O Lord, make haste to help me!
2 Let those be put to shame and confusion
who seek my life.
Let those be turned back and brought to dishonour
who desire to hurt me.
3 Let those who say, ‘Aha, Aha!’
turn back because of their shame.

4 Let all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you.
Let those who love your salvation
say evermore, ‘God is great!’
5 But I am poor and needy;
hasten to me, O God!
You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, do not delay!
