Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Acts 18
In Corinth
18 After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2 There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, 3 and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them. 4 Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.
5 When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah. 6 But when they opposed Paul and became abusive, he shook out his clothes in protest and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent of it. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”
7 Then Paul left the synagogue and went next door to the house of Titius Justus, a worshiper of God. 8 Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his entire household believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized.
9 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. 10 For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.” 11 So Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and a half, teaching them the word of God.
12 While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews of Corinth made a united attack on Paul and brought him to the place of judgment. 13 “This man,” they charged, “is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law.”
14 Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to them, “If you Jews were making a complaint about some misdemeanor or serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to listen to you. 15 But since it involves questions about words and names and your own law—settle the matter yourselves. I will not be a judge of such things.” 16 So he drove them off. 17 Then the crowd there turned on Sosthenes the synagogue leader and beat him in front of the proconsul; and Gallio showed no concern whatever.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven,
Hallowed Be Your Most Holy Name!
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are Holy,
You Alone Are The Most High!
teach us To Put Our Trust In You,
And Not In The Princes Of The Earth,
Or In Worldly Governments To Provide for Us,
For You Are Our Provider, Our Refuge, and Our Strength.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Back in the 1980's and 90's, I was an avid quilter. I had an entire room dedicated to the craft, another room dedicated to being a recording studio, and, finally, one to sleep in. The Quilt Room took up a lot of space. There was a worktable, the sewing machine, boxes and baskets full of fabric, spools of binding material, and mountains of fluffy batting and stuffing for the various weights of "loft" in the quilts. I got pretty good at it, and sold my quilts at International Fairs in various Eastern States. I even got into a verbal altercation with an Amish Woman who scolded me for appropriating Amish Culture while not being a part of the community. (It didn't devolve into fisticuffs, but it was rather heated.)
The first stage, called "Piecing", was the easiest part. Templates, Rolling Razor Blades, and Precise Measuring Tools made Piecing a breeze. Then the pieces would be sewn together in a series on the sewing machine, hundreds of them. Then, on the worktable, the smaller pieces would be joined together to make a design. The pieces would get bigger and bigger as they were joined together, and, finally, they would be layered with the batting and the backing, and sewn together with a hand-stitch, which is the actual "Quilting". That's when it becomes a little unwieldy, as the piece is now as big as a King-Sized Bed. If it's not properly basted together before the actual quilting starts, it shifts around, bunches up, goes askew, and becomes a real mess.
I began to see that one could build a sermon based upon the quilting process. Like the multicolored scraps of cloth from different origins, we are sewn together to make a big design. It is beautiful, just like the gorgeous cathedrals, cantatas, icons, and other artistic expressions we see in Religion".
However, without the Holy Spirit, which is like the Quilting Thread, the beautiful artistic expression of Religion gets bunched up, askew, and becomes a real mess. Nothing is quite as sad as a magnificent edifice, full of art, but from which the Spirit of God has departed. The Bible even has a word for that: "Ichabod".
I ended up teaching this sermon to Bible Study groups with bits of quilting at various stages as a demonstration. It was quite popular for a while.
Then I moved to Florida. Suddenly, it was TOO HOT to quilt! I also didn't have enough rooms in my new home to have one room for a recording studio and the other for quilting. That would have left me and my husband no place to sleep!
By far, though, was that the final stage of the quilting was too burdensome, sitting for hours with a huge quilt on my lap. So it had to go. I still have a Sewing Machine, but my current dwelling is even smaller than my Florida home. So I write about it instead.
If a quilt was heavy in my lap in Florida, I can't even imagine making tents in the Middle East. Yet, this was the Trade of Aquila, Priscilla, and Paul. (Although Paul had been a Scholar, it was customary to train boys in a trade, just in case the scholarly thing didn't work out.). Yards and yards of heavy fabric needed to be sewn together by hand and shaped in such a way as to provide a sturdy shelter. It was not a job for a solo artisan, but required teamwork.
The great city of Corinth was next on Paul's journey. At the same time, Jews were being persecuted in Rome, and the Emperor Claudius expelled them from the city. That is how Aquila and Priscilla ended up meeting Paul. Now this couple were tent-makers, and Paul knew that craft as well, so he worked with them. Like a group of people working on a huge quilt, I imagine they did a lot of talking, teaching, and sharing as they sat around the enormous amounts of fabric needed to make a tent. Both Aquila and Priscilla must have garnered an amazing amount of learning, hanging out with an intellectual giant like Paul. As we read further, we will see that is EXACTLY what happened. The sewing circle produced two more awesome and effective ministers of the Gospel.

Psalm 21
To the leader. A Psalm of David.
1 In your strength the king rejoices, O Lord,
and in your help how greatly he exults!
2 You have given him his heart’s desire,
and have not withheld the request of his lips.
Selah
3 For you meet him with rich blessings;
you set a crown of fine gold on his head.
4 He asked you for life; you gave it to him—
length of days for ever and ever.
5 His glory is great through your help;
splendour and majesty you bestow on him.
6 You bestow on him blessings for ever;
you make him glad with the joy of your presence.
7 For the king trusts in the Lord,
and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved.
8 Your hand will find out all your enemies;
your right hand will find out those who hate you.
9 You will make them like a fiery furnace
when you appear.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
and fire will consume them.
10 You will destroy their offspring from the earth,
and their children from among humankind.
11 If they plan evil against you,
if they devise mischief, they will not succeed.
12 For you will put them to flight;
you will aim at their faces with your bows.
13 Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength!
We will sing and praise your power.

So may be the origin of “women’s circles” in church?

So may be the origin of “women’s circles” in church?
Perhaps, but they seemed to have been Co-Ed back in Paul's day.
