The problem with that interpretation is that the Hebrew term used for Sons of God is "Bənē hāʾĔlōhīm" (בְנֵי־הָאֱלֹהִים) and that term is used ONLY for angels in the entire Bible. In fact, it is only used in Genesis 6:2, 6:4 and in Job 1:6, 2:1, 38:7.
Preachers don't like that use in Genesis 6 because they want a more prosaic interpretation of an otherwise very frightening saga in human history.

You have to admit the fallen angel thing, is very distasteful, and it IS very distasteful. So distasteful, that Julius Africanus, decided to change it. I believe the language is pretty clear, as you already pointed out. It’s not a salvation issue, so I don’t worry about it much, but I believe the sons of God, were fallen angels.
