Preachers don't like that use in Genesis 6 because they want a more prosaic interpretation of an otherwise very frightening saga in human history.

You have to admit the fallen angel thing, is very distasteful, and it IS very distasteful. So distasteful, that Julius Africanus, decided to change it. I believe the language is pretty clear, as you already pointed out. It’s not a salvation issue, so I don’t worry about it much, but I believe the sons of God, were fallen angels.

Well, it isn't a salvation issue, per se, but it is indirectly. By that I mean, when people start re-translating the Bible in ways that sounds "tasteful" (to use your term), they end up with a Bible that isn't, well, Biblical. Think Andy Stanley.

And people who come to Jesus using those tasteful re-translations might find that their Salvation isn't exactly Biblical.
