Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Acts 10

Peter’s Vision

9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. 10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. 13 Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”

14 “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”

15 The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”

16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.

17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate. 18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.

19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three[a] men are looking for you. 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.”

21 Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?”

22 The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.” 23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests.

We pray for the hearts of those who are so cold and hard that they promote the extermination of Jews. Hold mirrors in front of them that they cannot deny their ugliness. Help them to see that it is their own souls that they condemn. Lead them to repent.

Lord, we pray for all the hostages and their families that suffer under hamas. We pray for mercy.

21 Peter went down and said to the men, “I'm the one you're looking for. Why have you come?”

22 The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.” 23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests.

About three miles from my former home in Florida was a place called Butterfly World. My sister was visiting me, and we decided to check it out. It was Lovely! We enjoyed walking among the butterflies and hummingbirds in a huge screened enclosure that was like a Tropical Rain Forest. There was also an "Insect Museum", but my sister hates bugs, so she sat outside with the butterflies and I went in. (Wish I hadn't!). There were bugs on display from all over the world, some as large as a parakeet. What was worse were the little signs attached to the specimens:

USED AS A COMMON ALTERNATE PROTEIN SOURCE IN MAYLASIA (or Borneo, or New Guinea, or Wherever)

I was SO creeped out! Now I see NEWS items about the "powers-that-be" attempting to get Westerners to eat bugs. NOPE NOPE NOPE. I'll get my "alternate" protein from BEANS, thank you very much.

My childhood friend Gail tried to explain to me her Kosher Home. Her parents kept kosher not because they were particularly religious, but because they were proud to be Jews, and kept Tradition. But because they didn't attach any religious significance to their actions, they had a whole host of "explanations" for keeping kosher.

"We don't eat anything from a pig." she said. "It's because they are dirty, eat garbage, and carry trichinosis."

"What? No BACON?" was all I could say. I also thought that maybe nowadays, with grain-fed pigs and antibiotics, it might not be such a problem.

"Also we don't eat anything with paws instead of hooves."

OK. That made sense, I figured. Even though I like Korean Cuisine, I would NOT eat Dogs or Cats!

"AND, we don't eat birds that are scavengers like Eagles or Vultures. They eat carrion and it's disgusting!"

OK. That made sense.They probably taste like chicken, but I can't imagine eating an EAGLE!

"And we only eat fish that have fins and scales. That means no shellfish, because they live on the bottom and eat fish poop."

That made sense. But we live in Boston, the Clam Chowder and Lobster Capital of the UNIVERSE! I had NO idea that Jewish People couldn't enjoy a New England Clambake!

Then came the final blow:

"We don't mix milk with meat.We even have two separate sets of dishes for milk and meat so we won't EVER do that, even by accident"

Perhaps in the days of unglazed pottery and wooden dishes this may have made sense, but we have DISHWASHERS now.

"No Beef Stroganoff?"

"No Swedish Meatballs?"

NO CHEESEBURGERS????"

At the time, I could not make head nor tail of this whole kosher thing, but Gail's mom was a great cook and managed to serve a lovely dinner and still obey the rules.

Although a lot of the "rules" developed later during the many years of Exile and Diaspora, the basic prohibitions against Unclean Foods does indeed have its origin in the Torah. The separation of milk and meat comes from a line prohibiting a nasty pagan practice of boiling a baby goat in its own mother's milk. Who would want to do THAT, even by accident?

So, God gave these rules to Moses to show him that The Hebrews were to be a separate People. The distinction between "clean and unclean" was a spiritual one, and food was used to illustrate that. They were, in fact, being "Called Out", and, since FOOD is one of the most elemental of all needs, it is what is used to separate The Israelites from all others.

So this is what Peter has to overcome within himself. He must NOT think of any people as "Unclean". And, Once Again, God uses FOOD to make that point.

(Incidentally, the Greek Word that is used for "church" in the new Testament is "ekklesia" which means "The ones who are "called out".)

It seems like God was preparing Peter to go to the Roman’s house, that it’s OK. I’m so grateful Jesus laid down his life for all, not just the Jewish people.

Prayer For Unbelievers To Come To Faith In Jesus

Dear Lord, it is not Your will that anyone should perish but that all should come to faith in the Lord Jesus. Father, there are many hearts that are cold towards Your dear Son, for sin has infected the soul of every man and woman – and yet in Your love You continue to reach out to whosoever will believe on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation. Lord, all they have to do is to trust that Jesus died to pay the price for their sins and rose again the third day, to break the power of sin and death in their life, so that all who believe may have eternal life.

I pray Lord, that in Your grace and mercy, You would convict the hearts of many today of the evils of sin, of the price that the Lord Jesus paid for their sins and of the judgement of condemnation on all who do not believe in the only begotten Son of God as Saviour.

Father, I pray that many souls may be convicted of their need of the Lord Jesus today, and praise You for every person that will place their trust in Him.
