Acts 2

Peter Addresses the Crowd

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17  “‘In the last days, God says,
    I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
    your young men will see visions,
    your old men will dream dreams.

18  Even on my servants, both men and women,
    I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
    and they will prophesy.

19  I will show wonders in the heavens above
    and signs on the earth below,
    blood and fire and billows of smoke.

20  The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood
    before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

21  And everyone who calls
    on the name of the Lord will be saved.’[c]

22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,[d] put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25 David said about him:

“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
    Because he is at my right hand,
    I will not be shaken.

26  Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest in hope,

27  because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
    you will not let your holy one see decay.

28  You have made known to me the paths of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence.’[e]

29 “Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
35  until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”’[f]

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

One of the Courses of Study in Seminary or Bible College is Homiletics. Defined as "The Art of Preaching", it involves a lot more. A sermon has to get the people's attention, connect with the audience, argue the Truth by citing proof, draw conclusions, and answer questions. It also has to provide a solution to the issues addressed in the speech. Peter does this without ever having attended a homiletics class.

Wow…is this the same Peter that denied the LORD Three times?
The same Peter who gave up and went back to fishing?
The same Peter who threw dice to pick a new Apostle?
It most certainly is, but now Peter has been filled with The Holy Spirit. In the Power and Wisdom of The Holy Spirit, Peter gets the crowd's attention using humor ("We're not drunk…it's only nine in the morning!"), Cites Proof by quoting Scriptures from the Prophet Joel, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Psalms, and a makes a passionate appeal to the people, causing at least 3000 of them to be converted in one day. He draws conclusions and invites Audience Participation. He answers their questions without sugar-coating his answer (Repent and be Baptized). He also gives the Promise of the Holy Spirit to those who believe.

The biggest change that came over Peter was in the area of BOLDNESS.

In the last century, people were not shy about their Faith. Great Public Prayers by Abraham Lincoln, FDR, Winston Churchill, and General Eisenhower have been recorded for posterity, and used to be unabashedly recorded in the History Books. Even if we didn't share a person's religious views, we affirmed his or her right to them, and decried the plundering and closing of churches and synagogues in communist countries. I remember even being outraged when the Taliban blew up the Buddha Statues at Bamiyan, and I'm not a Buddhist (nor am I particularly fond of religious statuary, so my outrage is genuinely based upon the concept of Religious Freedom.)

That's why I am a Strong advocate of the Bill Of Rights, especially the First Amendment. Here it is:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Note that it doesn't say "Separation of Church and State" ANYWHERE! Nor does it say that government property has to be free from any religious expression, has has been the trend in the last 50 years or so. While nobody should be forced by government to believe anything, people in government have the right to express their religious views.

Anyway, this brings us to today's reading. Peter and the Apostles were pretty much in hiding after the Ascension of Jesus. The mood outside the walls of the Upper Room was not good. Their Master had been publicly executed, Gangs of Zealots plotted against the Roman Occupiers, The Jewish Authorities struggled to hang on to their tentative positions with the Romans in a delicate balance, and the people chafed under the yoke of oppression.

Suddenly, filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter goes outside and speaks to the people. He quotes Scripture, makes conclusions, and exhorts the People, resulting in 3000 being saved in one day.

The Holy Spirit is a better Teacher than all the Seminaries in the World. He gives a a boldness that no course in Homletics can match.

Lord God,

How our hearts are heavy for Israel as they bare the sorrows of the loss of their loved ones and fears for those taken hostage in such brutal and barbaric ways. However Lord it is a time now where they must stand strong together and wise as their solders prepare and go to battle....Lord be their strength and their wisdom as decisions are made and being made as only you can give and grant. Be their eyes and minds to determine the way you would have them to go at each step...and guard their steps from making wrongful turns. We ask this so that your will might be done and your purposes be forthcoming in the days and weeks ahead.

Protect Jerusalem Lord, this great city you will one day rule over. Keep those in it as the apple of your eye and let not the enemy of men touch there apart from your will.
