[Catholic Caucus] Synod Cardinal Speaks on LGBTQ+ Catholics and Those Who Love the Traditional Latin Mass

Among the main provisions of Traditionis Custodes is that the bishop must be the one who authorizes the celebration of the Eucharist with the 1962 missal.

The archbishop of Newark, New Jersey, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, responded to two questions about how the Church welcomes Catholics from the “LGBTQ+” community (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals, queer, and more) and about how it treats the faithful who love the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM).

At the Tuesday, Oct. 10, press conference on the Synod on Synodality at the Vatican, the cardinal responded to a question about those who feel “excluded” from the Church, which the working document mentions, such as divorced persons who remarry without an annulment and people who identify as LGBTQ+.

Responding to a question posed by an Italian journalist, the cardinal recalled that a few years ago he received “a pilgrimage of people who felt marginalized due to their sexual orientation — LGBTQ+ people — in the cathedral. I couldn’t be at the entire service due to other commitments, but I welcomed them.”

“One of my auxiliary bishops, a Cuban American, had a wonderful reflection after the welcome that I gave: ‘We have a beautiful cathedral ... probably the most beautiful in North America. … Bishop Mani [Manuel Aurelio] Cruz said: ‘This is a wonderful and beautiful place, but it is much more beautiful when the doors are open,’” he continued.

“So I think the real beauty of our Catholic Church is clear, when the doors are open, when they welcome. And it is my hope that the Synod will help us to be so in a more significant way,” Cardinal Tobin said.

What would Tobin say to those who love the TLM?

So Gays say they feel on the outside. Church responds,” Let them in”. Catholics who desire the Latin Mass say they feel they’ve been abandoned by the Church. Church responds, “Tuff! Suffa!”

I don’t go to church to affirm how I feel about myself; I go to learn how I should feel.

xkaydet65 :" So Gays say they feel on the outside. Church responds,” Let them in”.
Catholics who desire the Latin Mass say they feel they’ve been abandoned by the Church. Church responds, “Tuff! Suffa!”

We are commanded by the Savior, to "love the sinner"
but to abhor the sin (sinful act)
I too feel abandoned by the Church, since the 'Chair of Peter' has chosen to abandon the historical cross-cultural Latin Mass
for the sake of grasping cultural modernism, and thus ignoring the unifying language which makes the Church Roman Catholic.

I was a soph in a Jesuit HS when Vatican 2 began the road to the Vernacular Mass. As a grammar school altar boy I knew the responses and the prayers they responded to by heart. It was a fact that the girls in our classes learned the responsed and meanings from the St. Joseph Missal. But I also remember the older women at the weekday 8AM Mass with their rosaries, standing and kneeling utby rote but never missing a Hail Mary on their beads. So to me that was the weakness of the Latin Mass. It was a fence that prevented full participation. OTOH go to Mass in NYC, Rome, or Hong Kong and the Mass and meaning were familiar like a family. It struck me that some compromise could have been constructed. But I knee from theology class that the first Masses were said in Aramaic and Greek. Followed by Latin and Egyptian.
Still there used to be people with humor in all of this. Being a teacher I was asked by ny pastor if I’d consider serving the 9 during Summer weekdays. I told him sure, but you won’t understand my responses. I then recited the Confiteor in its entirety. He laughed heartily and said no, he didn’t understand and didn’t know if it was the Confiteor or gibberish.
