John 21

Jesus Reinstates Peter

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.

25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

This is one of the best descriptions of the different words for "LOVE" that are used in the New Testament:

1. Eros (ἔρως): Refers to romantic love felt towards one's spouse. This Greek term is where the word “erotic” is derived from. The word "Eros" is not actually used in either the Old or New Testaments.

2. Phillia (φιλία): Refers to feelings one has towards close friends “brotherly love” This word was used in the New Testament to describe Jesus’ love for his disciples (John 20:2) and for Lazarus (John 11:3).

3. Agape (ἀγάπη): This is the kind of love that we should have for all men, and also for our enemies. It is a selfless kind of love that Christians must have in regard to acting in the best interest for all human beings.” But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” (Matthew 5:44).

4. Storge (στοργ): This Greek word refers to love we have for our parents, siblings, our children and other members of our family. Paul used this word in the negative in Romans 1:31 when he described the pagans the hat he was in contact with being without “natural affection.” SOURCE

As Jesus questions Peter, He uses the "Phillia" word in the first two questions. Then, in the third question, Jesus uses the "Agape" word. My 1985 NIV Study Bible differentiates between the two different words by translating "Agape" as "Truly Love". Otherwise, it seems that Jesus asked the same question three times. Peter denied Jesus three times, but the Third Time was with an oath. Perhaps the increasing intensity of Peter's denials needed an increasing intensity in the three questions that would reinstate him as an Apostle.

When we were naughty as children, and mom found out, she would address us by our FULL name, in a menacing tone. For example:

"Mary-Elizabeth-Catherine-Marie-Connolly, tell me this instant what you've gone and done now!"

Anyway, this is how Jesus addresses Peter by the side of the Lake. We see no affectionate nickname (Peter means "rock" or "stone"), no indication of "belonging" (Jesus gave Peter this nickname when he was first initiated as a Disciple), and no authority (Jesus had called him "Peter" when giving him "the keys to the kingdom"). These three times, Jesus addresses Peter as "Simon, son of John" (Simon Bar Jonah). Peter KNEW he was in trouble.

Yet, the tongue-lashing that he expects doesn't happen. Instead, it is a question:

"DO YOU LOVE ME?"

This question, asked three times, hurt more than any rebuking tirade. And as we will read tomorrow in the Book of Acts, Peter is "Peter" again, with no trace of his "Fall".

Prayer Of Deep Repentance

Lord God, You alone are worthy to be praised for You have created us by Your mighty power, redeemed us by Your precious blood, and You hold all things together.

Lord, I know that I have sinned against You and have acted in rebellious and wicked ways, by turning away from Your commandments and ignoring the truths that are contained throughout the Scripture for my instruction, training in righteousness and well-being.

I have not listened to Your Word and have turned aside from Your voice. I have ignored Your many calls to holiness and I stand before You poor and wretched, naked and ashamed.

Lord God, according to Your grace and mercy, I ask for Your forgiveness. Keep Your promise to me, Your child I pray, and wash away my many sins. Help me to put the past behind me and enable me to walk into the future with a desire to do Your will and to live godly in Christ Jesus.

Thank You, Lord, that Your mercies are new every morning. Thank You that even though I have been so faithless towards You, You have remained faithful towards me.
