MARTYRS IN THE BIBLE STEPHEN, FIRST CHRISTIAN MARTYR
|
ACTS 6-7
| | STEPHEN “SPEAKS TRUTH TO POWER” | | |
Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. The elders and the teachers of the law seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin. They saw that his face was like the face of an angel. Stephen replied, “You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! Was there ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him — you who have received the law that was put into effect through angels but have not obeyed it.”

When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep

Yes! I noticed some have him older than others.
I always pictured him as a teenager at the stoning............

I have him as mid-to-late twenties, in order to be granted so much police power so shortly thereafter.

Yes, that would be a good guess. It was soon thereafter that he began hunting down Christians for the Temple Priests.............

he began hunting down Christians for the Temple Priests.............It's been my understanding that he did more than "hunting down" those believers. Certainly, he admitted imprisoning them, at the very least. But did he also execute some?

The work is carved from three pieces of wood: one was used for the saint and the other two for the lateral extensions of the seat. The modeling is so convincing that when viewed from the front, the figure, in fact a sculpture in relief, appears to be rendered fully in the round. The statue is well preserved except for the loss of much of the original polychromy. The relief probably was once part of a series of seated figures of saints that may have included St Lawrence, another deacon saint often depicted together with St Stephen in Late Gothic art. I don’t think he had that authority. He would capture them and bring them back to Jerusalem for the trials by the Sanhedrin, like a Bounty Hunter.....................

Those rocks on the Bible are a wonderful identifier, in the artistic tradition of showing the martyr’s manner of death.

I just wonder whether the hysteria against the new sect ever got so frenzied, as these persecutions will, that such trials were dispensed with and summary executions imposed.....................
