So many great artists..West, Corbould, Moreau with his fantastic, personal interpretations; Armitage, Caravaggio. Luini had worked in the circle of Leonardo but painted with a more conservative taste, with more sentiment. His prolific output made him very popular in his time.
The Bible reports these sad tales, so I suppose artists must illustrate them—and I must present them. But I wonder to what extent some of these artists, who seemingly painted so enthusiastically, nevertheless shared some of my distaste for the thing.
Visual retelling of stories. Old Masters balanced the gruesome subjects with other works of beauty, serenity and radiance. I share your distaste for the gruesome subjects.
There is one Bible story that, as the father of daughters, I resolutely refuse to present: Jephthah and his daughter. Yet I willingly present any number of merciless slaughters. But that’s just me.
GUSTAVE MOREAU is very good today. Very nice detail in his work.
It’s not often that I run across his work, but he certainly took an interest in Salome....
Hans Unger captured the evil, more effectively than any I think.
Unger's #36. Evil is in the eye of the beholder, Scott; I'm partial to Delaroche's icy Herodias in #43.
Yes, that one and Benjamin-Constant (#12) also caught my eye. Those both have a bored-depressed quality to them that is quite interesting…when it comes to evil anyway. The Unger really hit me.
So glad that evil does not appeal to you, Scott--even if you are a Padres fan.
There is no evil quite like the Padre’s performance this year.
My best friend, the Padres fan, thinks Melvin will go.
He may be right…but it may be that Preller is really the one that should go. Melvin is not a strong enough personality for the many rich, young players that are the core of the team. He presses the buttons and plays the strategy but he isn’t a motivator. He’s a quiet manager for a quiet workman-like team. This is a poor fit.
But Preller is the real problem. Putting Soto and Bogaerts on a team with too many big personalities already (Manny, Tatis) and emptying a very good farm system to do it was criminal. The Dodgers are a much better example of how to do it. How different Mookie, Freddy, Will Smith and Muncy are than Tatis, Machado, Soto and Bogaerts. And the Dodgers never trade off their farm system. Preller has saddled the team with massive contracts and under-performance…and all the help from the farm system is now two years away, not right now. The Padres will sink fast and recovery will not be quick.
Just glad the Dodgers let Manny and Yu--and Puig and Verdugo--go. Much prefer solid citizens like Mookie and Freddie. And Urías is done....
Hello Dan, and good day to all.
Yes, distasteful indeed, but a great story, and fine art. We are thankful that God’s Word does not flinch in telling painful stories, even about giants of the faith.
Thank You Dan!

You can say that again....
well Salome, good luck finding a good husband
