John 14

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[c] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.

Naturally, the Disciples are upset that Jesus is going to leave them. But here, He promises to send Another Comforter". The word Jesus uses can mean "Comforter", "Helper", or even a Legal Advocate. It is from the Greek work that we get the Name "Paraclete" for The Holy Spirit. The Following Story is about a time when I needed an advocate, but I was on my own:

Way back in the early 70's, I was in a job that I hated. I was a bill-collector for the phone company in the office that handled final bills for people who had already been shut off. Of Course, nobody would pay a bill for something they didn't have anymore, so my job was totally frustrating and meaningless. On top of that, the boss kept calling me off my desk to do art projects for him (motivational posters, fliers, announcements, etc) but I was still expected to collect my quota of payments from transient and nonexistent people who hadn't paid their bills in the first place when they HAD telephone service! Ugh!

Finally, I quit. However, I wanted to get unemployment, because I believed I had been treated unjustly. The Telephone Company had a team of lawyers (The dreaded "LEGAL DEPARTMENT") and I had nobody. So, being the good little hippy that I was back then, I went to an activist law group that specialized in discrimination cases. The "womyn" paralegal insisted I had a case, as I was female, (and ALL females were supposed to be believed!), and they assured me they would do everything to get me my unemployment benefit.

The BIG DAY came, and I dressed up and went into town. On one side of the room sat my ex-boss and three company lawyers. On the other side there was just me. The "Womyns' Activist Lawyer" NEVER EVEN SHOWED UP!

I carefully explained that I had been asked to do art projects but was still expected to meet a quota, and the ex-boss admitted that was correct. The Three Lawyers never got to say a word, and the panel of judges ruled in my favor.

I am not proud of what happened back-in-the-day before I knew the Lord, and I know I had some very wrong political thoughts back then. I was smug and thought that the world owed me a living. But it looks as though the Lord was watching out for me even back then.

The "paralegal" that was supposed to be my advocate never showed up, because she was an activist with an agenda, and I was nothing to her. The name for The Holy Spirit is from the same Greek word that we get "Paralegal". In the ancient legal system, a paraclete was and advocate, one who stood beside his client, and spoke for him, providing comfort and safety in navigating the treacherous labyrinth of The System.

The Paraclete (Upper-Case) is The Holy Spirit, and will never leave nor forsake us.
