Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

John 11

The Death of Lazarus

11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.”

4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”

8 “But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?”

9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light. 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”

11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.”

12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.

14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”

16 Then Thomas (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Dear Heavenly Father
We Love Your Because You First Loved Us!
You Are The Holy One,
The Redeemer of Israel.
And though the world gathers against Your People,
You Are Forever Faithful.
We, who are called of You to Believe and Obey Your Word,
Lift up Our Voices and Declare,
You Are Holy,
You Are Worthy,
And You Are The One True God!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

There are lots of new readers on this site, and at least ten new people on my personal e-mail list. There are others who have been reading and responding daily for over 13 years. I want to share some of my older stories with my new readers, but to those who have heard them before, FEAR NOT! You are not having an incident of Deja Vu, nor are you going crazy. It's just me bringing up some of my older stories for some newer readers. If Johann Sebastian Bach can do it, I guess I can too! (I am listening to all 270 Cantatas in order, and he does it all the time, but it's still GLORIOUS.) Anyway, here is what I wrote about this chapter over five years ago:

In the Opera "Carmen", country-boy Corporal Don Jose becomes infatuated with a beautiful Gypsy Girl named Carmen. He is so blinded with desire for her that he disobeys his superiors by abetting her escape from custody, does time in the brig, and ends up deserting his post to join her smuggling gang up in the mountains as her lover. Carmen isn't even faithful to him in spite of what he has given up for her, and she has already set her sights on a handsome bullfighter as her next conquest. Just as things are getting really ugly, Don Jose's young innocent ex-fiance bravely seeks him out in the mountain hideout with terrible news. His Mother is Dying! At that moment, Don Jose drops everything (including a knife fight with the bullfighter) and rushes home. It is a turning point in the Opera, and not implausible that he would react immediately to this news.

Mary, Martha, and Lazarus were more than just disciples or followers of Jesus. They were His friends. We see in the Gospels the dinners they shared at their home in Bethany. Mary was filled with devotion, both when she sat at His feet and learned from him, and when she anointed Him with expensive perfume. Martha's love took a different course. She was practical and active, bustling around to make sure everyone was fed and comfortable. Lazarus was possibly not a healthy man, and it may be that he suffered from some disease that required home care. That would explain why his sisters never married, and stayed with him in the same house.

When Martha went to Jesus to tell Him that Lazarus was sick, she expected Him to drop everything and come heal him. This was not unreasonable, and actually showed her faith. Imagine how shocking it must have been when Jesus delayed His return for a few days. It was just enough time for Lazarus to die, be shrouded in grave clothes, and buried. Even the disciples are puzzled by this and discuss it among themselves. They know that the area is dangerous, as they had just seen the Jewish Leaders attempt to stone Jesus for blasphemy. On the other hand, they know Jesus is not afraid of them. So why the delay?

Well, of course the delay is to show the Glory of God through Jesus' greatest miracle so far. He had already healed the sick, and even raised a few dead people. But this would be the first time He would bring a rotting corpse back to life. There could be no arguments about resuscitating someone who wasn't really dead, or perhaps using psychology to cure a psychosomatic illness. This was to be undeniable, unmistakable, and an inexplicable Miracle of the first order.

The South Shore Music Community recently had a Concert to raise money for the Survivors of the Maui Inferno. Now this same group was the one that raised money for my sister, and for an elderly loyal fan who needed a reliable car. This is a loosely formed group of people who don't have much money themselves, as they live by playing in restaurants and taverns, and go to each others' gigs.

Meanwhile, I have seen ZERO "Concerts for Maui" or big fundraisers by the very Rock Stars and Celebrities who actually own property in Hawaii. Imagine a concert with the remaining members of Fleetwood Mac, Steven Stills, Oprah Winfry, Steven Tyler, The Rock, Bette Midler, Jack Johnson, Roseanne Barr, Woody Harrelson, Willie Nelson, Natalie Merchant, and many, many others of diverse political affiliations and musical styles. If such a crowd could get together for Biafra, Bangladesh, or even New York City, why not an American town?

Either nobody cares, or maybe they are "part of the problem".

But, if a bunch of musicians, who get canceled from a patio gig if it rains and never recover the shortage that week, can have a benefit concert and raise a good chunk of money for Maui, why not?

OK...that's enough ranting for today. Shalom.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Psalm 78 (56-72)

56 Yet they tested the Most High God,
and rebelled against him.
They did not observe his decrees,
57 but turned away and were faithless like their ancestors;
they twisted like a treacherous bow.
58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places;
they moved him to jealousy with their idols.
59 When God heard, he was full of wrath,
and he utterly rejected Israel.
60 He abandoned his dwelling at Shiloh,
the tent where he dwelt among mortals,
61 and delivered his power to captivity,
his glory to the hand of the foe.
62 He gave his people to the sword,
and vented his wrath on his heritage.
63 Fire devoured their young men,
and their girls had no marriage song.
64 Their priests fell by the sword,
and their widows made no lamentation.
65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,
like a warrior shouting because of wine.
66 He put his adversaries to rout;
he put them to everlasting disgrace.

67 He rejected the tent of Joseph,
he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;
68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion, which he loves.
69 He built his sanctuary like the high heavens,
like the earth, which he has founded for ever.
70 He chose his servant David,
and took him from the sheepfolds;
71 from tending the nursing ewes he brought him
to be the shepherd of his people Jacob,
of Israel, his inheritance.
72 With upright heart he tended them,
and guided them with skilful hand.
