Tuesday night, a contentious debate over religious freedom broke out on Twitter between a Republican congressman and a former Trump campaign staffer. To make matters even more interesting, a Democratic congresswoman joined the fray, offering a strong defense of America’s First Freedom. Although the congressman eventually apologized for his comments, the debate shed light on how the nature of religious freedom can be misunderstood.
It all started when Lizzie Marbach, the director of Communications for Ohio Right to Life and a former Trump campaign official, tweeted the following via her personal Twitter account: “There’s no hope for any of us outside of having faith in Jesus Christ alone.” Thirty minutes later, Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) responded to Marbach, writing, “God says the Jewish people are the chosen ones, but yet you say we have no hope. Thanks for your pearl of wisdom today.” Miller went on to retweet Marbach’s original post, adding, “This is one of the most bigoted tweets I have ever seen. Delete it, Lizzie. Religious freedom in the United States applies to every religion. You have gone too far.”
Marbach responded to Miller, explaining, “Sorry, Congressman, but these are the words of Jesus himself.” After quoting John 14:6, Marbach paraphrased Philippians 2:10-11 stating, “No one has hope outside of Jesus Christ and every knee will bow one day declaring that Jesus Christ is Lord.” Marbach then wrote, “Even when a sitting Congressman tries to get us to deny the truth of the gospel, we can’t. We must obey God rather than man.” She quoted Romans 1:16, in which Paul says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”

Lookit, what you're saying has all been said before:
"37 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, 38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from people. 42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
John 5:37-47 (ESV)
With respect, your fundamental problem isn't that you aren't a "good Christian." Rather, where you're going wrong is that you're a bad Jew. Just as Jesus here was warning his fellow Jews in Jerusalem.
That's what you need to get sorted. Every synagogue today is a synagogue of Satan, almost by definition. You are very badly deceived.
She can take that up with Jesus, who said it, when she gets called in for her face to face with Him.
So clearly Miller is NOT for religious freedom. It obviously doesn't apply to those whose opinions she disapproves of.
It’s not stalking when you post on an open thread on a public forum and someone comments on it.
Get over yourself.
I'll bet that would surprise them and their families.
They were all Jewish and that is recorded as a fact. Seems like others are not the ones having problems with facts and truth.
Gentiles didn't come onto the scene in the early church for several years. It was ALL only Jews for the initial period of time.
What an interesting comment...given your previous comments.
Shall I show the evidence?
(still here after all...laundry still not finished)
It’s so obvious that the farther we get from Jesus ,the more our country falls.
Lots of muslims (or ex muslims now) reported having dreams of a person telling them to seek out Christians, and later figuring out that it was Jesus in their dreams.
The pastor at my old church (a Presbyterian church! Conservative side of things, but still Pres. and we finally had to leave) told the story of a person that “had” to meet with him. The guy was there on a Saturday, and the pastor just happened to be there for a wedding rehearsal. The guy wouldn’t take no for an answer and waited quietly.
After the rehearsal the pastor asked him what he needed.
The guy (a muslim) told him that he had a recurring dream of a church building, and he had traveled for days around town trying to find the building. That day he found it - it was our church.
The pastor asked the guy about if he had seen a vision of Jesus (knowing about the Jesus visions, the pastor does lots of work with muslims, the church has a sub-church with ex-muslims from Africa).
Nope - no Jesus, just the church. Of course he came the following day to the service for the former muslims. That African church is an amazing story. It began with a few Tutsi families, and then a Hutsi family came (or vice-versa). Anyway - they had some forgiveness issues to work out. As the church grew they determined that some of their relatives have probably killed other member’s relatives.
Oh - and while I don’t believe in Allah or or any other God, why wouldn’t someone believe that their religion is the “only way”?
“This was always the plan.”
Genesis 3:14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this [deceived Eve]...
15: and I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.”
I forsee one Republican congressman losing a lot of votes and being primaried in 2024.
The congressman comes across as Masonic in his religious world view.
The issue in this thread strums a chord with which ebb tide and This Guy have been steadily (but not always cooperatively) conducting a duet in contention with MurphsLaw whose leanings seem to lie with what appears to us (and many other fellow Catholics) to be a JPII/Bishop Barron/Bergoglian form of false ecumenism and wanton religious pluralism—as if God the Father positively wills religions other than Catholicism (including tens of thousands of protestant “denominations”), and wants us to believe that all that counts in terms of achieving the Beatific Vision is being a “good person” during one’s earthly life.
As if ours is NOT the One True Faith.
As if the four words Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus has since the time of Pope Saint Pius X (the turn of the last century over 100 years ago) been drained of all meaning, and sapped of its power to produce conversions worldwide and among every different people.
Anyway, the popcorn’s cold now. MurphsLaw, flirtatiously pinged by Ebb Tide (Let’s you and him fight!), didn’t take the bait.
There’s that “he” pronoun again. And “his”. Where in that passage is the antecedent reference for those singular, masculine pronouns?
Behold your mother.
Genesis 3:14-15 (Catholic Douay Rheims):
And the Lord God said to the serpent...I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.
Sorry, it’s true.
The fact that your people have lived in massive confusion and a curse for the past 2,000 years stems from a reason.
Look in the mirror and realize that when you and your people reject God there are consequences.
Your time in the desert is up (1,878 years later).
You will either cry out to the one who you pierced or be tossed aside. Your choice.
Lots of people will - shame.
Well said.
What a load of malarkey! Might as well tell Buddhists, Hindu, Muslims, etc. the same thing. We don't buy the precepts of your religion. It has no relationship to us or the religion we follow. If you want to paint your genitals purple, howl at the moon, and call it your religion, that's your right. But it is NOT your right to condemn MY religion, which predates yours by rather a long time. We are not rejecting G-d, only YOUR version of YOUR god. As to the other stuff you accuse Jews of, take it and stuff it. It means nothing to me and mine. Absolutely nothing.
Your anger doesn’t change the Truth.
Jesus is God!
He is the Messiah!
He is your Messiah!
