Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

John 4

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

4 Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John— 2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. 3 So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.

4 Now he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])

10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

17 “I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”

21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
Hallowed Be Thy Name!
We Put Our Complete trust in Your Covenants.
For Your Are Faithful and True To Your Word.
And So, We Are Not Afraid of the Darkness by Night,
Or The Arrow That Flies by Day.
Your Promise is Consistent Throughout Your Word.
We Look Ahead With Joy,
As We Anticipate the Fulfillment of Your Promises,
For You Are Faithful,
Even When We Are Not.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

My friend Anita was a Missionary Nurse in Haiti for eleven years. When she came home, nine coups, seven hurricanes, an earthquake, and the Clinton Embargo later, she told me this story:

"You can always tell how long a missionary has been in Haiti by the way they drink their coffee.
FIRST YEAR MISSIONARY: A fly drops into the coffee. The newbie dumps out the coffee, scrubs the cup, wipes it dry, and pours a herself a second cup.

SECOND YEAR MISSIONARY: The Second-Year Missionary plucks the fly out of the cup and continues drinking her coffee.

THIRD YEAR MISSIONARY: She doesn't even notice the fly until she has swallowed it, and then thanks God for the extra protein.

Well, this always got a laugh, but, secretly, those who were laughing were thinking "Eyew! If I ever become a missionary, it won't be to Haiti. Maybe the people of Tahiti or Mykonos need the Gospel more!"

The Cruise Ships used to go to Haiti as one of their ports of call, however, that hasn't happened for a long time. While the other side of the same island (Dominican Republic) has lots of vacation spots, Haiti is avoided due to its extreme poverty, misery, and lawlessness. And so, your cruise itinerary will go the long way around to avoid Port Au Prince, and most vacationers agree that is fine with them.

To get from Galilee to Jerusalem, the shortest route goes through Samaria. Because of a long history dating back to the Assyrian Conquest of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, Samaria was avoided. What had happened was that the conquerors exiled the Israelite residents and replaced them with captives from other conquered lands. This left an ethnic and religious mix that was cut off from Jerusalem, and, therefore, cut off from the ONE place that God had designated for Worship. So, these unfortunate people had to come up with another way. They had the First Five Books of Moses, so there was that. But, without the Prophets and other inspired writings of the Tanach (what Christians call the Old Testament), they worshiped on a local mountain and waited for the Messiah without knowing what to look for. Pious Jews would rather add a couple of days to their journey by crossing the Jordan twice to get to Jerusalem rather than cut through Samaria. Not only did they avoid Samaria because of possible violence, they considered the Samaritans unclean and wouldn't even drink water from a cup that a Samaritan had touched.

This is where we find Jesus, during the hottest time of the day, at a well, asking a Samaritan woman to give Him a drink of water, and He hadn't even brought His own cup. It was worse than the First Year Missionary with the fly in her coffee. Not only that, the woman was a sinner, which is probably why she came to the well when nobody else did as it was the hottest part of the day. It was as if the Disciples' cruise ship had made a stop in Port Au Prince for lunch.

(I know most First Year Missionaries would prefer the Greek Islands to Haiti, but St. Paul got that covered 2000 years ago.)

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Psalm 108

A Song. A Psalm of David.

1 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast;*
I will sing and make melody.
Awake, my soul!*
2 Awake, O harp and lyre!
I will awake the dawn.
3 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples,
and I will sing praises to you among the nations.
4 For your steadfast love is higher than the heavens,
and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,
and let your glory be over all the earth.
6 Give victory with your right hand, and answer me,
so that those whom you love may be rescued.

7 God has promised in his sanctuary:*
‘With exultation I will divide up Shechem,
and portion out the Vale of Succoth.
8 Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;
Ephraim is my helmet;
Judah is my sceptre.
9 Moab is my wash-basin;
on Edom I hurl my shoe;
over Philistia I shout in triumph.’

10 Who will bring me to the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
11 Have you not rejected us, O God?
You do not go out, O God, with our armies.
12 O grant us help against the foe,
for human help is worthless.
13 With God we shall do valiantly;
it is he who will tread down our foes.
