“Barbarism is that which prevailed from the days of Adam down through ten generations to the time of Noah. It is called barbarism because of the fact that in those times men had no ruling authority or mutual accord, but every man was independent and a law unto himself after the dictates of his own will.” (John of Damascus, “The Fount of Knowledge,” cited in Political Apocalypse, Ellis Sandoz, p. 131)
Pre-flood barbarism was an anarchy of selfishness in accord with Nietzsche’s moral philosophy, “You have your way, I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, it does not exist.” Thus, it is no different from its’ “enlightened” and supposedly “evolved” modern Western counterpart. The animating spirit of both pre-flood and post-flood barbarism is “there is no fear of God before their eyes,” (Rom. 3:18) and “they do not love the Truth” (2 Thes. 2:10).

Mz. Malarkey hardest hit.
.
there’s that pesky free will, again.
what does this piece of writing say about the touted ideals of self-determination?
Free will and self determination is fine, you just need to know what to do with it.
“Our first parents fell into open disobedience because already they were secretly corrupted; for the evil act [would] never [have] been done had not an evil will preceded it.”
Augustine got a little bit carried away. Paul says that Eve was deceived, not that she was aleady secretly corrupted.
Yes and no.
Just as you say, "the 20th century [was] the bloodiest, most catastrophically destructive century" [in history, so far].
This was the result of the advancement of war technology, without any advancement of civilized behavior or wisdom.
We can look at the exponential speed of our technological advancement today and conclude that, though we may not know the exact Day of the Lord, it will have to be pretty soon or humans will destroy themselves entirely.
We have a choice to love God and keep his commandments or follow the ways of the World.
Jesus (God) taught us that few would find the narrow gate that leads to eternal life and many will follow the path that leads to destruction. Matthew 7:13-14 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits.”
One needs to accept God’s graces and do what is right in our heart based on God’s commandments and not one’s evil desires.
As we are all sinners, then we need to repent and confess our sins and change our hearts. Jesus spoke harshly to those with hardened hearts.
Perhaps speaking of the evil will of the serpent?
As I stated: Free will and self determination is fine, you just need to know what to do with it.
Therefore, all that can be known at present – and forever – is that there is no absolute or fixed certainty in either the area of truth and morality and the Revealed Word of God.

They’re absolutely sure of this. Hahahaaa!
Oh yes, absolutely sure. Their spirit guides told them so. (sarcasm)
