John 2

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b]

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

My motorcycle, a 1993 Harley Davidson FXR Superglide, does not have a gas gauge like a car does. It does, however, have a trip meter which I automatically set to zero every time I gas up. When the trip meter reads 100 miles, I know it is time to start looking for a gas station. After 120, it will be time to switch to the Reserve setting, which will give me another ten miles by cooking the sludge at the bottom of the Tank. After you use up that, you are out of luck. I don't like switching to reserve on the fly because it is distracting and could cause an accident.

On a trip to DC from Boston, somewhere in Upstate New York, it was getting dark. I looked down at the trip meter which said 100. I indicated to my husband that we needed to take the next ramp to gas up. Off the ramp we went, into deep woods without a gas station in sight. We turned around and got back on the highway. The meter now read 110.

The next exit sported a sign boast no fewer than FOUR gas stations. I signaled to Mike and we veered onto the ramp onto a desolate stretch of road with four closed gas stations. We turned around, and got back on the highway. The trip meter now said 125, and I had not yet changed to Reserve. The engine would tell when to do that by sputtering and cutting out, which wasn't happening. I thought about Elijsha and the Widow with the olive oil, and kept riding. Of course, every time we took an exit, it burned more gas. I looked down again and the trip meter said 160, and still no sputter. This was getting weird.

Finally, I saw a lit up gas station. We pulled in and gassed up. It took a full tank of High-Test, which, at the time, came to $9.00. I went to reset the trip meter and noticed it read 180. I had never changed to Reserve.

That has never happened before, nor since. I have the same bike, thirty years later, and it always gives me a sputter at 120. Go Figure!

My Beloved Friends of all denominations have plenty to say about the role of Jesus's Mother Mary at this wedding feast. Some de-emphasize her actions, and some over emphasize them. Some misunderstand the response Jesus gives her, and others take it to "prove their point". Many call this Jesus's "First Public Miracle", when it was actually in a private setting, between family and friends. One thing we can all agree on is the sentence that Mary spoke to the servers at the feast:

"Do whatever He tells you to do."

That, my friends, is excellent advice!
