Daily Mass Gospel Reflection- Leave It To Caesar
Word on Fire Ministry ^ | 6.6.23 | Bishop Robert Barron

Mark 12:13-17 Friends, in today’s Gospel,
Jesus enunciates a principle that is an implicit resolution
of the vexing problem of religion and politics:
“Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar
and to God what belongs to God.”

God is the deepest source and inspiration for everything in life,
from sports to law to the arts to science and medicine.
Everything comes from God and returns to God.
So what about our famous question of religion and politics?

Politics is not in a realm separate from the religious;
rather, its deepest ground is spiritual.
Thomas Aquinas held that law comes from the eternal law,
which is identical to the mind of God.
This eternal law is reflected in the human mind and heart,
those basic principles that are called the natural law.
Positive laws—from traffic regulations to antitrust laws—
are then concrete applications of the natural law.

Hence all law—
the very stuff of politics—has to do with God,
since positive law nests in the natural law,
which nests in the eternal law.
This is why we should expect our politicians
and judges to be acting in accord
with moral and spiritual goods.

KEYWORDS:
+++Some Pharisees and Herodians were sent to Jesus
to ensnare him in his speech.
They came and said to him,
"Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man
and that you are not concerned
with anyone's opinion.
You do not regard a person's status
but teach the way of God in
accordance with the truth.
Is it lawful to pay the census
tax to Caesar or not?
Should we pay or should we not pay?"
Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them,
"Why are you testing me?
Bring me a denarius to look at."
They brought one to him
and he said to them,
"Whose image and inscription is this?"
They replied to him,
"Caesar's." So Jesus said to them,
"Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar
and to God what belongs to God."
They were utterly amazed at him.+++

Repay? Repay? What translation is that? What the hell was the matter with render?

"What the hell was the matter with render?"
"Render" (KJV) has a subtler meaning than "repay." It doesn't imply that it is really owed. I don't know the subtler meaning in the original language if any. The thought also occurred to me that the ancient Jews used a special coinage that they could buy to contribute to the Temple.
