Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 12

Warnings and Encouragements

12 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be[a] on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.

4 “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

8 “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. 9 But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”

Our Father In Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy To Be Praised And Worshiped,

Righteous,
and Infinitely Just!

Mom graduated High School in 1944. The Ceremony was scheduled to be held at Boston's iconic Symphony Hall, home of The Boston Pops Orchestra. When the Pops have their evening concerts, the entire audience floor becomes a Cabaret, with tables, chairs, centerpieces, a full bar menu, and festive decorations. Normally, it's cleaned up right away and the hall is restored to a Concert Venue in plenty of time for the next event.

However, this June Evening was different. The Invasion of Europe was announced, and everybody left, knocking over chairs and running home to turn on the radio. The place was not cleaned up, and the Graduation ceremony had to be moved to Tremont Temple on Beacon Hill. Mom's Irish Catholic Parents would forever be ambivalent about their daughter's Graduation taking place in a Baptist Church. But hey...it was D-Day.

Mom measured her life by D-Day. It was, perhaps the most important and memorable thing that happened in her life up to that point. I didn't understand how something that happened so long ago (ten whole years!) could be so important or traumatic to her, that is, until I was in the sixth grade.

As I sat in the sixth grade classroom, bored as can be, and waiting for the dismissal bell, a person came running into the room and whispered something in the teacher's ear.

"Everybody go straight home right now," she said. "The President has been SHOT."

I didn't believe her at first. She must have meant the president of the school, or some company, or whatever. NO WAY could she have meant my beloved President Kennedy, young, handsome, fellow Bostonian, and a friend of my family. (My aunt's entire family ran the Hyannis compound. Yeah...they were SERVANTS, but we LOVED the Kennedys.) For years after that fateful day, I measured my life in terms of November 22, 1963. (That happened before 11/22/63, or that happened after 11/22/63). Of course, at the time, we thought of JFK's presidency in heroic proportions, and never mentioned any suspect behavior on his part. It wasn't until many years later that some of the glow wore off and historians started to reveal the seamier side

I measured my life that way until September 11th, 2001. Then I started measuring from that date. The most traumatic things in our lives stand out the most.

That being said, let us stop and reflect upon the fact that Today is D-Day, the Day of the the Invasion of Europe by Allied Forces, to free the World from Nazism. There was no ambivalence about whether or not the nazis were EVIL and needed to be defeated. What had been a closely guarded secret was now being shouted from the Housetops, even interrupting a Boston Pops Concert at Symphony Hall.

We should always remember.
