So, I'm flying out of San Diego at 6:00 am this morning.
I got to the airport much earlier.
There's an Anabaptist couple. Man and woman, early-mid 20s.
He's wearing traditional garb. Abe Lincoln beard. Flat-brimmed straw hat.
She's wearing a long dress with a white hair covering.
I assumed they were Amish.
Except....
Both were wearing tennis shoes. And I couldn't help to notice that she was wearing a very colorful set of yoga pants under her dress.
Also, she was listening to an iPhone. She had earplugs in her ear.
I wish I had talked to them. I regret very much not doing so.
Also, she was quite beautiful (and I'd guess he was as well).

Mennonite. Years ago, on a high school field trip, I saw a Mennonite couple with kids in the Everglades Park in a RV camper. Their, simple black and white clothes gave them away, as did the black tape on the chrome of their RV. My understanding is that the black tape is a way to show commitment to simplicity without forgoing the usefulness of motor vehicles.
That explanation simply doesn't go far enough.
Most sensible people won't spend money on things for which there are cheaper alternatives. Most FReepers, for instance, would not spend money on purchasing a calculator if a cheaper alternative (like pencil and paper) would completely satisfy their needs.

They take to a farther extent than most Freepers, but that is the essence of their position as I understand it. Somebody else pointed out that they are somewhat communal as well, not wanting anybody falling too far behind or get too far ahead of other members lest it weakens the community ties.

Very difficult to know for sure, but they could be Beachy Amish.
Why is this news?
Probably Mennonite. Quite a few of them in my area. Good people. I know a couple of families. One of the church elders is a top notch electrician. There is a store/bakery up in Kemp that has some awesome pies and sandwiches, etc.
Like I said, good people.
The most common reason for having a mobile phone, is because pay phones are not common. Part of traveling, means being able to coordinate with drivers.

Mennonite. Really a lot like the Amish. They are wonderful people. We have them here in NH. Dress in traditional clothing, yet drive cars. Work hard, and have a church nearby. She leaves me homemade bread once in a while hanging on the mailbox.

I have heard that the true Amish also have their roots as Anabaptist. IIRC, there’s a book they hold dear that has to do with the Anabaptist martyrs in their heritage.
An Amish community near my mother’s home in western NY has a phone for the community in a little shack. I don’t know if it’s a pay phone, or how it’s set up.

He was not well read outside of Biblical topics. I found him to be smart as a tack, friendly, and funny at times. Most of all, he was happy and contented.
Just watch Free Republic for awhile. Conservatives can’t agree on much of anything, so they go form their own church.
Maybe because intelligent people are curious about their fellows.
