REVELATION «Chapter 18» After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. With a mighty voice he shouted: “FALLEN! FALLEN IS BABYLON THE GREAT! She has become a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit, a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird. For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.” Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes. Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Mix her a double portion from her own cup. Give her as much torture and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. In her heart she boasts, ‘I sit as queen; I am not a widow, and I will never mourn.’ Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

11 "Babylon Burning" “When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her. Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry:
“ ‘Woe! Woe, O great city, O Babylon, city of power! In one hour your doom has come!’ “The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no one buys their cargoes any more, and bodies and souls of men. “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your riches and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn and cry out: “ ‘Woe! Woe, O great city, dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls! In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’ “Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off. When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city?’ They will throw dust on their heads, and with weeping and mourning cry out: “ ‘Woe! Woe, O great city, where all who had ships on the sea became rich through her wealth! In one hour she has been brought to ruin! Rejoice over her, O heaven! Rejoice, saints and apostles and prophets! God has judged her for the way she treated you.’ ”

By your magic spell all the nations were led astray. In her was found the blood of prophets and of the saints, and of all who have been killed on the earth.”

Interesting note: (though some eof the details are a little hazy to me now- it was a long time ago I heard th3 message)
Saddahm was in the process of rebuilding Babylon. He thought that he was a direct descendant (or reincarnation) of king nebuchadnezzar, and actually had money made with both the king and his own image in the money.
He had myriad bricks made with his mark on them as well. He tried to buy the gate of the temple to some false God, but Germany I think it was, who owns it now, wouldn’t sell it.
He was pouring mo ey into rebuilding g the batonical hanging gardens which was one of the world wo ders at the time before babylon fell.
Dr Jeremiah has a video on the topic on his site. He gives a lot more details in the video.

...dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet. Purple use to be a very expensive color, so it became the color of royality. A cheap way to make it from coal tar was accidentally discovered and made the fellow who did it a very rich man. It was only recently that the actual structure of that purple molecule was actually determined.

New to me also. He took an intense interest in Revelation, seemingly illustrating every chapter, so that he became a mainstay for me. He certainly has a style that is readily identifiable.

On that note have you seen Odilon Redon’s APOCALYPSE DE ST. JEAN? He was an amazing French artist who really had a wide range. In APOCALYPSE he does 12 images in rather “simple” line art, almost an impressionist version of Dore.

I did find several of those but couldn’t see a way to include them without disrupting the flow.

At the time I said the same thing here on FR and was chided (rightfully) for my
eisegesis--reading my own meaning
into the text--rather than taking the intended meaning
from the test--
exegesis.
Having now had 22 years for consideration, it seems likely to me that the prophesied event will dwarf what we saw then.

Babylon as godless world system. Augustine's "earthly city", doomed to destruction. NYC is a temporary, local and imperfect instantiation of Babylon.

"Fire next time."
The further along in life I get, the more I see how the world works, the less I like it. And the more I think it will all be swept away.

the more I see how the world works, the less I like it ♫ This world is not my home
♫ I'm just a-passin' thru
♫ My treasures are laid up
♫ Somewhere beyond the blue
♫ The angels beckon me
♫ Through heaven's open door
♫ And I can't feel at home
♫ In this world anymore

On 11 Sept 2001 I was mortified.
But about five years later, (after exposure to how the world really works) I could see the spirit of Babylon in our government/culture. No disrespect to the firemen, first responders and victims of 9/11....
I agree with our host, Babylon falling at the end will make 9/11 seem microscopic.
And the only exit plan is Jesus Christ.
