Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 9

The Cost of Following Jesus

57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”

But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”

62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
We Come into Your Glorious Presence With Singing,
And into Your Courts With Praise!
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The Most High,
The Great I AM.
God of Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob,
We Worship You and You Alone,
Creator of All That Is,
And Sovereign LORD of All Nature,
Which is Under Your Control at All Times.
How conceited we humans can be,
Thinking that we somehow can control the mighty forces
That are Yours and Yours Alone!
What hubris, to think that somehow we are little gods
who can influence and change the course of climate,
history,
or Your Will!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

My Dad was a U.S. Navy Veteran who served in both World War 2 and the Korean War. He and my Mom are buried in the Bourne National Cemetery, which is on Cape Cod. Cape Cod is isolated from the mainland by a Canal. The canal is spanned by two bridges for traffic and a railroad trestle. The two traffic bridges are about seven miles apart from each other, and are approached by two different highways. The Sagamore Bridge is approached by Route 3. The Bourne Bridge is approached by an almost rural Route 28. The National Cemetery is approached by the Bourne Bridge...the one with the narrow, almost rural, road. Map.

About a week ago, my brother was lamenting that he wanted to visit the Cemetery on Memorial Day, but the traffic was so insane on Route 28, that it was impossible. I suggested that, since he is retired, and lives near the cape, he can go anytime he wants. I've been there on a weekday, when I feel like I am the only one there among acres and acres of grave markers. But I suppose it's not the same as going there on Memorial Day.

Besides, we had a Family Wedding yesterday. It was at a lovely home in Middleboro MA, right off ...you guessed it...Route 28. I trembled with horror at the prospect of competing with the nightmare traffic leading to the Bourne Bridge on Memorial Day Sunday, and frantically tried to map out an alternate route. The other approach went down Route 3, the INFAMOUS highway to the Sagamore Bridge, which has vicious "Cape Traffic" every Sunday, not just Holiday Weekends. But 28 led right to the National Cemetery, so Route 3 it was. I calculated an extra 40 minutes to our drive time.

I was pleasantly surprised at the light traffic, and we arrive TOO early, while they were still setting things up.

Today's Reading contains what may be the most puzzling passage of Scripture that bothers people even to this day. By coincidence, it shows up on Memorial Day, the day when we honor our Military, who gave their lives in Service to Our Country. Jesus invites a man to Follow Him. He responds “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” From the way this is worded, it looks as though the man's father had just died, and that the funeral was that afternoon. So why was Jesus's answer so harsh-sounding?

The answer lies in both the Custom of the Day and Jewish Law. If the man's father had passed away recently, he would have already been buried. There was no making a date for a funeral, embalming, or other delays. So what the man was really saying was:

"Lord, what you are saying sounds nice, but I'll follow You later, after my parents die. Then, after I bury them, and have no other obligations, I'll follow You."

Of course, this was as good as a refusal. The man had no idea how long his father would live, and no idea what other obligations might follow, causing further delay. As the Scripture says:

"Now is the Day of Salvation" Romans 13:11

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 126

A Song of Ascents.

1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,*
we were like those who dream.
2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then it was said among the nations,
‘The Lord has done great things for them.’
3 The Lord has done great things for us,
and we rejoiced.

4 Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like the watercourses in the Negeb.
5 May those who sow in tears
reap with shouts of joy.
6 Those who go out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
carrying their sheaves.
