Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 7

Jesus and John the Baptist

18 John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”

21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[a] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,

    who will prepare your way before you.’[b]

28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John. 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)

31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:

“‘We played the pipe for you,
    and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
    and you did not cry.’

33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”

Luke 7

Jesus and John the Baptist

18 John's disciples told him about all these things.

From even before she helped turn Max Yasgur's Farm into a sea of mud and trash, Citizen Suzie had a passion for saving Mother Earth. She was particularly concerned with Wildlife, and championed causes that helped prevent the senseless slaughter of Eagles, Owls, and other Birds of Prey. Then she got very involved in saving the Whales, and became an enthusiastic member of Greenpeace.

When Nuclear Power, once touted as the solution to Air Pollution coal-burning power plants, started having a problem disposing of spent fuel, Suzie joined the movement to ban Nukes. Surely, Hydroelectric, Solar, Wind, and Geothermal Power could provide all the needs of the Modern World!

Although Suzie's own hometown had not yet introduced Recycling, she noticed that some of the more affluent suburbs had multicolored plastic bins for recycling. What a great idea! Suzie organized other citizens to demand recycling. Eventually, her city got the bins, one color each for plastic, glass, and cardboard. These were distributed to the residents, three bins apiece, and detailed instructions were included. The glass and plastic had to be thoroughly cleaned from any organic matter, and the cardboard had to be corrugated, dry, and clean (NO PIZZA BOXES!). This was OK with Suzie, who dutifully washed and separated all the recyclables, and placed them neatly in the separate bins for the separate truck (which ran on Diesel) which came on a separate day to pick them up. What a wonderful thing, when the town went to "Single Stream"! That meant that all the recyclables, glass, plastic, and cardboard could go in one bin! Huzzah! Now her life would be so much easier. She still had to make sure the items were clean though. Some things, especially Peanut Butter jars, were nearly impossible to clean, even with lots of hot water and detergent. This dilemma was solved by loading up the dishwasher with all the plastic and glass slated for the Single Stream, and running an extra cycle. The three multicolored bins were replaced by a single barrel, with hooks on it so that the separate Diesel truck that took the second trip around the community, could pick up and empty the barrel without having to hire any new guys to do the work. There was no need for Recycling to become an Employment Opportunity when a machine could do the job!

Suzie was delighted with Single Stream, because it made her life a little bit easier, and she was still helping to save Mother Earth. Then things started to get weird.

The first inkling was when she heard about the caribou up near the Alaska Pipeline. Suzie vaguely remembered protesting the Pipeline because it was theorized that the Migration Paths of the Caribou would be disrupted, causing the extinction of the species. After all, Extinction is Forever, right? Now she was reading articles about the Caribou population increasing exponentially, due to the caribou lingering near the Pipeline while mating, because it was warmer there due to the little heaters that had been installed to keep the oil flowing. The Caribou had never been imperiled at all.

Then Suzie read of an island larger than Manhattan in the middle of the Pacific Ocean made up entirely of plastic bottles that she had, in good faith, collected, cleaned, and separated in order to be recycled. They hadn't been recycled at all, but just dumped into the ocean. That made her wonder about all those multicolored plastic bins. Had they been just collected and dumped too?

Then the very people that Suzie had supported started blowing up dams., saying that damming up rivers caused a habitat problem for various fish and reptiles. Hydroelectric Power wasn't such a good idea after all.

The last straw came when Suzie read about her beloved Eagles and Whales being affected by Wind Turbines. Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, and other magnificent raptor Birds were being CHOPPED UP by windmills. And the Whales, her beloved Whales, were washing up dead on beaches where Wind Turbines had been installed offshore. The Whales, who travel by echolocation, were disoriented and became sick and died.

Citizen Suzie realized that, no matter what she did, she could not appease the fanatics. Their agenda had never been the Conservation of Natural Resources, but had always been about Power, Control, and Compliance.

Suzie sighed as she dropped the latest notice into the Single Stream Bin. They were coming for her Gas Stove (originally purchased to save on electricity) and her Dishwasher.

It's enough to turn a person into a Conservative!

Jesus knew that, no matter what He did, there would be those who opposed Him. He compared the people to a children's song at the time which basically said 'You're damned if you do and damned if you don't." John the Baptist had been very strict and righteous in his approach to religion. This offended the Powers-That-Be, and John was now in prison. Jesus, on the other hand, welcomed sinners. They were, of course, expected to leave their sinful lives if they were to follow Jesus, but Jesus was not afraid to meet them where they were. The Pharisees hated both of them, even though they presented two different approaches. There was no appeasement, and never would be.

With the Pharisees of the time, it wasn't about Faith, but about Power, Control, and Compliance. Some things never change.

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 129

A Song of Ascents.

1 ‘Often have they attacked me from my youth’
—let Israel now say—
2 ‘often have they attacked me from my youth,
yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 Those who plough ploughed on my back;
they made their furrows long.’
4 The Lord is righteous;
he has cut the cords of the wicked.
5 May all who hate Zion
be put to shame and turned back.
6 Let them be like the grass on the housetops
that withers before it grows up,
7 with which reapers do not fill their hands
or binders of sheaves their arms,
8 while those who pass by do not say,
‘The blessing of the Lord be upon you!
We bless you in the name of the Lord!’
