Please: the truth about the Pope’s health

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Vatican simply told us the truth about the Pope’s health?

Last Wednesday, when the Pope was hospitalized, the Vatican press office reassured us that he was going in for “previously scheduled” tests. The next day we were told he was suffering from a respiratory infection, and by the weekend, as the Pope was released, the word was that he had been treated for “severe bronchitis.”

In an excellent analysis of “The Pope’s Mysterious Hospitalisation”, Vatican journalist Edward Pentin lists the questions raised by these explanations:

As he left the hospital, the Pope joked with reporters that he didn’t understand his medical condition, and they would have to ask the doctors for an explanation. He was joking, of course, but bronchitis is not difficult to understand.

Step back a bit, and look at the available evidence: An 86-year-old man, who has been (definitely) gaining weight and (maybe) under closer medical supervision, rather suddenly complains of chest pains and difficulty breathing. He is rushed to the hospital, where after a matter of hours his condition is stabilized and he resumes his normal duties. Those facts do not suggest bronchitis. Speculation about what they do suggest is inevitable, when the information coming from the Vatican PR machinery is implausible.

The Pope has a right to privacy, like everyone else, and we do not need to know every detail about his medical condition. The Vatican could simply decline to answer specific questions, and leave us to wonder and worry and pray for the Pope’s health. Better no information at all, then information that we cannot trust.

I heard the same small group of power brokers who decided to install him would be in charge of selecting the next Pope.

I as a non-Catholic see little difference between this and the US political backroom deals for nominees for mayors, governors and for President.

The group supposedly thought Francis would appeal to young people and especially Central and South Americans and Africans who now are responsible for reversing the totals that are suffering from declines in the US and the West.

Edema (fluid retention) is often caused by heart failure.

If I recall correctly, the Vatican never officially talked about the declining health of Pope John Paul while he was alive.

After he passed away, there were reports that he had suffered from Parkinson’s disease and other problems.

But while a Pope is alive, apparently there is no official confirmation that he has any medical problems.

Actually. As a Catholic who attends Mass pretty much every week.
... Short of him awakening to the damage he is doing, I don’t really care what happens to him.

I’m not sure what you mean by “the same small group of power brokers.”

There are about 120 cardinal electors. When Pope Benedict was selected, Pope Francis had been promoted as a strong conservative, opposing the prevalent “social gospel” which tended towards socialism and even the trafficking of illegal immigrants into Argentina from Bolivia, etc. What killed Francis’ candidacy had been he was perceived as too cozy to the right-wing former government. It turns out that Francis’ issue really is that he is an insufferable, unprincipled suck-up. “Whore” would not be too tough of a word. Now that he floats in the UN circles, he just wants to suck up to Communist China, the fanatically anti-Christian European Left, etc.

Would the same folks pick her again? I think there is strong sense that many of those who voted feel deceived. But unfortunately, Francis has replaced many good Cardinals with many evil ones, such as Cdl. Cupich of Chicago.

Not sure why anyone’s medical condition is our business.

What is gained by examining his medical records? I doubt if he were terminal it would cause anyone reading this to have to change plans for the next week?

We can pray for the sick.

It was widely reported that JP II had Parkinson’s long before he died.

We don’t get another pope until he dies, so I will watch patiently for that.
