Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 12

The Parable of the Tenants

12 Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. 2 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3 But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. 5 He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.

6 “He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

7 “But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

9 “What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10 Haven’t you read this passage of Scripture:

“‘The stone the builders rejected

    has become the cornerstone;
11  the Lord has done this,

    and it is marvelous in our eyes’[a]?”

12 Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Abba, Father.
Blessed is Your Holy Name.
Blessed Are You, Oh LORD,
Our God,
King of The Universe,
Mighty and Glorious,
Eternal, Immortal, and Almighty!
You Alone Are Worthy of Our Most Humble Worship!
For You Alone Are The Most High!
Shout Unto the LORD with Gladness,
Serve Him With Joy,
For He is The One True God Of Abraham,
And The One Who Delivers Us from Our Enemies!
Oh LORD, Some trust in Chariots, and some in horses,
But we depend on the name of Our God!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Psalm 75

To the leader: Do Not Destroy. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song.

1 We give thanks to you, O God;
we give thanks; your name is near.
People tell of your wondrous deeds.

2 At the set time that I appoint
I will judge with equity.
3 When the earth totters, with all its inhabitants,
it is I who keep its pillars steady.
Selah
4 I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast’,
and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn;
5 do not lift up your horn on high,
or speak with insolent neck.’

6 For not from the east or from the west
and not from the wilderness comes lifting up;
7 but it is God who executes judgement,
putting down one and lifting up another.
8 For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup
with foaming wine, well mixed;
he will pour a draught from it,
and all the wicked of the earth
shall drain it down to the dregs.
9 But I will rejoice* for ever;
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.

10 All the horns of the wicked I will cut off,
but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted.

A Tale of Two Trailers:

Single-Wide Trailers #28 and #29 stood side by side. In #29 lived Bea, a friendly, older woman who lived alone, who was retired. She didn't have any children but had lots of friends. In #28 lived "Bob" a man who was nice enough, but somewhat reclusive. Both were decent neighbors, and always greeted me when I walked my dog around the park. Bea passed away in 2018, and some of the neighbors attended her Memorial Service. Her Trailer was purchased by my handyman Jim, who along with his business partner, refurbished it and rented to Ann, who was NOT a nice person. In fact, Ann would drink to the point of rage, break things, and then pester Jim to fix it. She began withholding her rent, paying only half, or employing other tactics to manipulate Jim, which, of course, caused him to avoid doing any maintenance at all on the property. Since Jim also had a drinking problem, things got very volatile. Then COVID hit. The fear and isolation escalated an already difficult situation. One day, Ann called Jim's wife to yell and complain, and the wife screamed back "JIM IS DEAD!!!" He had dropped dead at home the night before. Now Ann had a problem. Jim's business partner would not put up with her nonsense, and started eviction proceedings. Also there was a matter of compensating Jim's widow, but that couldn't happen till the house was sold. The Property Manager couldn't seem to get in touch with anybody.

Meanwhile, Bob, the recluse next door, passed away. We have no idea whether it was COVID or depression, or something else, but the entire HAZMAT TEAM showed up and took him away. It was so sad, because there was no Memorial, no announcement, nothing. He was a nice man, and didn't deserve that kind of ending.

With Bob's empty house right next door, Ann saw a golden opportunity. She rented it out to SQUATTERS! After a few months of that, we were treated to a performance of the SWAT TEAM, complete with the K9 Corps, removing the squatters, and, once again, #28 was empty. Ann was finally evicted which meant #29 was empty too. Months went by and the two properties got worse and worse. Finally, the Management Company sent in the bulldozers, and will eventually fill the lots with two new "Double-Wides", which will raise the Property Values of every other house in the Park.

In the Ancient Middle East, "Absentee landlords" held property, developed it, and then employed tenant farmers to cultivate the land. The "rent" was a share of the crop, and the landlord would send his servants at harvest time to collect it. In an age before PayPal and Venmo, or any kind of telecommunications, this all had to be done in person. As we see in Jesus's Parable, that could be dangerous if the Tenant Farmers decided NOT to pay their rent. They became "Squatters" and that form of theft led to even more deadly sins.

While most of Jesus's Parables have more than one level of meaning, this one goes above and beyond even that. The servants who go to collect the rent, and who are abused by the tenants, represent the Prophets, Apostles, and others who have the Word of God. The tenants are those who reject these Prophets, so they could be the People of Israel, The Pharisees, People in General, or you and ME. When God sent His Son into the World, it was ALL of us who crucified Him, not just the Romans, the Jews, or the Pharisees. Jesus parallels History with this story, but also predicts His Death yet again to His clueless disciples.

The landlord in the Parable said "They Will Respect My Son", but we could see what was coming because we know the WHOLE Story. Imagine, though, hearing it for the first time. This must have been one of the most shocking and scandalous parables Jesus had ever shared with the disciples, involving theft, abuse, and murder.

My Trailer Park Tales do not even come close.
