Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 9
Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit

14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.

17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”

“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.[a]”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Almighty and Eternal God,
How Excellent is Your Most Holy Name!
How Glorious and How Wonderful You Are,
And How Righteous and Just!
For You Alone Are Worthy to be Praised And Worshiped.
You Alone Are the Creator of All That Is.
You Alone Are The One True God.
From Everlasting To Everlasting,
You Are the Alpha and Omega,
The Beginning And the End,
The All In All.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

For those of you who have been praying for Jamie, the pins are out, and he has started to play guitar, but it's very painful. There is lots of Physical and Occupational Therapy ahead, but he has picked up his guitar which is a good thing. In order to follow through with the Therapies ahead, he will need a Positive Attitude, and, of course, your kind prayers.

One of my favorite childhood books (Read Regularly by Captain Kangaroo)was The Little Engine That Could. I am sure that you remember it too. It teaches Optimism and Positive Thinking, which are good and decent things.

In my adult years, I became enamored of a book called Atlas Shrugged, which had a segment about "A Little Engine That Couldn't". No amount of Optimism or "Positive Thinking" could prevent a tragedy when an old coal-burning engine was substituted on a Passenger Train that had to go through a long tunnel that was not designed for it. Everybody on the train perished from carbon monoxide poisoning, and it is a turning point in the novel.

"Atlas Shrugged" did not attribute the deaths to Optimism or Pessimism, but to the enormous ignorance and stubbornness of a monstrous Bureaucracy. You can't change the Laws of Physics with Positive Thinking. This is the opposite message from "The Little Engine That Could", but it is, of course a whole different context. What may work going OVER the Mountain may not work going THROUGH the Mountain. In either case, Prayer would have helped!

My sister and I are facing a huge challenge right now. It involves a State Bureaucracy, a Medical Bureaucracy, and a Legal one too, all rolled into one. Ever the Optimist, I plunged in to help, filling out forms, copying them, running to the post office, touring Nursing Homes, filling out more forms, making phone calls, networking with Social Workers, and so on. While your experiences may differ, I have slammed into a stone wall at every stage. I may have started out like "The Little Engine That Could", but now I feel like Dagney Taggart.

The recently commissioned apostles were elated that they had been given an anointing by Jesus to preach, teach, heal, and exorcise the many needy people in the area. They even got a little overly optimistic, thinking that they were operating under their own power. They were like "The Little Engine That Could."

"Even the demons obey us!" they were heard to say.

But then, they ran into a stone wall, and became "The Little Engine That Couldn't". The poor boy, who had suffered from possession for years was controlled by a whole "Bureaucracy of Demons". All the Optimism and Positive Thinking could not dislodge them, so they bring the boy to Jesus.

Jesus rolls His eyes, and does a face-palm. "How long do I have to put up with you guys?" He asks.

Then He exorcises the demons from the boy, and tells the apostles that "This kind only comes out with prayer." There is no formula or ritual, and the Authority doesn't come from the believer himself but from God. It is not Pessimism or Negative Thinking to know that in and of ourselves we are powerless. It's not "I Think I Can" but "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Romans 8, my paraphrase)"

Don't glean your Theology from Capt Kangaroo or Ayn Rand. While both of then may have had useful life lessons, neither of them told the Whole Story.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 63

A Psalm of David, when he was in the Wilderness of Judah.

1 O God, you are my God, I seek you,
my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
2 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
beholding your power and glory.
3 Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you.
4 So I will bless you as long as I live;
I will lift up my hands and call on your name.

5 My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast,*
and my mouth praises you with joyful lips
6 when I think of you on my bed,
and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
7 for you have been my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.
8 My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.

9 But those who seek to destroy my life
shall go down into the depths of the earth;
10 they shall be given over to the power of the sword,
they shall be prey for jackals.
11 But the king shall rejoice in God;
all who swear by him shall exult,
for the mouths of liars will be stopped.
