Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 8
The Way of the Cross
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life[b] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven,
How Wonderful and Magnificent is Your Most Holy Name!
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are Holy,
You Alone Are The Most High!
Omnipotent, Omniscient, And Omnipresent,
You Know The End from the Beginning
and the Beginning from the End.
We Bless Your Name and Thank You,
Most Gracious and Hallowed LORD,
For Your Holy Word.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

This is a memory from my childhood, and I wonder if any of you have had a similar experience in Grammar School. (Incidentally...it is no longer called "Grammar School", as English Grammar doesn't seem to be the main focus anymore.) That being said, does anybody besides me remember Diagramming Sentences?
Most of the kids utterly despised this exercise, but, since it involved drawing lines, I loved it. The teacher kept coming up with more difficult sentences to diagram, and I reveled in it, that is, until I was confronted with this passage from The Gospel of Mark, in the King James Version:
"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul, or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" (Mark 8:36 KJV)
I dutifully drew my lines for the Subject, The Verb, and all the other parts of speech. I knew there was a Conjunction (or) in there somewhere, but I couldn't break the sentence up. I was totally stumped. I had never heard such a sentence before. I was so intrigued by its meaning, that I couldn't fathom its sentence structure. What a question! It got me thinking, but not about the Parts of Speech. I memorized the sentence because it intrigued me and appealed to my overdeveloped sense of Justice.
Later that year, I was being tested for Advanced Placement for the Fifth Grade. The Tester did all the standard IQ tests and then showed me a picture. It showed a shabby-looking man approaching a little cottage. The wind was blowing leaves in ONE direction, and the smoke from the chimney was going in the opposite direction. The teacher asked:
"What's wrong with this picture?"
Well, the direction of the smoke was the obvious answer, but I figured that was too easy. And so, my answer went something like this:
The wind is blowing and it's cold. The man has no place to go and will probably freeze to death, but he sees the smoke coming from the cottage and knows it's warm inside. He hesitates. Will the owner of the cottage accept him or reject him? What will he say when he knocks on the door? What kind of a person lives in the cottage? He may be warm and comfortable, but selfish and evil. "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul, or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?".
The teacher was stunned. "Didn't you notice the smoke?" she asked.
"Oh THAT," I said. "Of course! But you asked me what was WRONG with the picture, not what was stupid about it."
I got into the Advanced Class, which was terrific. The Fifth Grade was the best year of school of my entire life.
Imagine my joy when, during the first time I read the New Testament from start to finish, I came across Mark 8:36-37. "So THAT'S where it came from!" I silently thanked God for my Fourth Grade teacher who was into Diagramming Sentences.

Let’s hear it for diagramming sentences! These days the kids can’t even form sentences not to mention using the correct punctuation. . . if any.
