Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 4
Jesus Calms the Storm
35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

The quickest way to Nova Scotia from New England is a ferry from Portland Maine to Yarmouth. This is a ten-hour cruise, so the ferry has to be equipped with cabins and dining services. The trip from Maine was on the Prince of Fundy, of Swedish Registry. I love the Sea, and, as the daughter of a Navy Man and granddaughter of a Gloucester Fisherman, I prided myself in my "Sea Legs".
The trip to Yarmouth was uneventful. We feasted on the Smorgasbord, watched movies, and played games. There was entertainment as well. It was a nice little cruise. We disembarked at Yarmouth, and drove all around Nova Scotia in my Father-In-Law's big brown Oldsmobile Delta 88, which we had dubbed "The MOOSE". It was delightful. We went horseback riding in Grande Pre', and sailing on the Le Harve River. We even got to visit the mysterious Oak Island, which is now a TV Program on the History Channel. It was a wonderful week, but now it was time to go home, on a different ship, the Bolero, of Norwegian Registry, which was larger and more luxurious than the Prince of Fundy. It was still a 10 hour crossing, across the Gulf of Maine, even with the newer ship.
We feasted on the Smorgasbord and had a nice time aboard the Bolero until we hit a storm that was so bad that the boat was stalled just outside Portland harbor. There was no way to navigate into Portland because the seas were so rough.
Everybody on board, including the crew, got seasick. Everybody...except ME.
"Ha Ha!" These miserable landlubbers can't even endure a little North Atlantic Storm?"
Undeterred, I strolled around the ship. I played the piano, put a few dimes in a slot machine, and looked around, but mostly just explored the ship. I walked into the deserted Dining Room and saw a glass of water sitting on a table. The glass was half-full, and the surface of the water was tilted at an angle of nearly 40 degrees. I stared at this phenomenon, and suddenly it dawned on me that the WATER was level, and it was the SHIP that was tilted. As this realization hit me, I was overcome by a huge wave of nausea, and a headache that was worse than any I had ever experienced. I crawled back to my cabin and was seasick for the remainder of the journey.
The Sea of Galilee is very large (or at least I thought so until I flew over the Great Lakes), and because it is situated among rugged mountains, can have some severe weather. The cool wind from the Mediterranean mixes with the hot humid air over the Lake, and sudden squalls can rise up out of nowhere.
These storms are every bit as scary as a storm at sea, and can cause fear even in a seasoned sailor. The disciples were so frightened by the storm that they woke Jesus up from His much-needed rest. Jesus calmed the storm, but He also reproved the disciples for their lack of faith.
Faith in and of itself is a neutral thing. It is the object of our Faith that makes the difference. On the Bolero, I had faith in myself, the ship, my family heritage, and my own body and mind. All it took to make me violently ill was the mere appearance of instability, and the tilting of my whole world to 40 degrees. At that point my Faith became useless.
If the disciples had placed their Faith in Jesus instead of their navigational skills, experience, and knowledge of the sea, they would not have been afraid. Even asleep, Jesus was in control.
Faith in oneself, or in Faith Itself, is useless. But Faith in Jesus makes all the difference.

Psalm 116
1 I love the Lord, because he has heard
my voice and my supplications.
2 Because he inclined his ear to me,
therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
3 The snares of death encompassed me;
the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
I suffered distress and anguish.
4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:
‘O Lord, I pray, save my life!’
5 Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
our God is merciful.
6 The Lord protects the simple;
when I was brought low, he saved me.
7 Return, O my soul, to your rest,
for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.
8 For you have delivered my soul from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling.
9 I walk before the Lord
in the land of the living.
10 I kept my faith, even when I said,
‘I am greatly afflicted’;
11 I said in my consternation,
‘Everyone is a liar.’
12 What shall I return to the Lord
for all his bounty to me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the Lord,
14 I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
15 Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his faithful ones.
16 O Lord, I am your servant;
I am your servant, the child of your serving-maid.
You have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer to you a thanksgiving sacrifice
and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts of the house of the Lord,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!
